Baji couldn't help but think how most of the females he had encountered were ruthless and cold-blooded.

No matter what sacrifices were made for them—Males, even if it cost someone their life, they remained unmoved.

His father's tragic death had been a result of trusting an old female, and Baji had sworn never to make that mistake again.

It was rare to find someone like his mother or the few females he truly respected—different from the rest.

Unique in their gentleness, in their warmth.

His golden-yellow eyes dimmed slightly as he watched the trio outside gather firewood, the cool wind rustling through the trees.

For three days, he had observed them from a distance, since the moment they had moved into the caves near his vantage point. But, out of all of them, his focus was always on Takemichi.

Takemichi, the petite male who seemed so out of place among them.

Baji found himself studying him more carefully than anyone else, his eyes never straying far from him. He couldn’t understand how someone like Takemichi could exist.

Small, delicate, his pale skin almost glowing in the faint sunlight that filtered through the forest. He moved with a quiet grace, always neat and clean despite the rugged conditions they were in. Takemichi smelled fresh, too, like the soft scent of herbs, something that stood out in a world of sweat and blood.

Yet, for all his apparent weakness, there was a strength in Takemichi that was undeniable.

It wasn’t physical—he wasn’t strong like Mikey or Draken or even him. But it was something deeper. His kindness, his unyielding resolve. Baji had seen males with muscles for days break under pressure, but Takemichi?

He had survived things that should’ve shattered him, but here he was, standing tall, even if he looked fragile on the surface.

Baji felt a pang of something unfamiliar in his chest. It bothered him. At first, he had assumed Takemichi was a female.

Now, as he crouched behind a rock on the edge of the cliff, hidden by the thick underbrush, he watched again. It had become a habit—one he couldn’t shake, even if he tried. From this high vantage point, he could see everything happening in the camp below. The caves where they lived were carved into the rocky mountainside, scattered like little hideaways among the towering trees.
