A week had passed, and the weather had begun to shift.
The air was crisper now, noticeably cooler than when Takemichi first arrived. He could feel it creeping in, biting at his skin in the early mornings and late evenings, a sharp contrast to the warmth he'd grown used to.
Winter was approaching faster than he expected.
Takemichi gazed upwards, his eyes tracing the rough ceiling of the cave above him, as though lost in thought. In reality, his mind was preoccupied with the latest task the system had assigned to him.
"Triggering the second series of tasks: Please collect enough food before the cold winter arrives."
The system had instructed in its usual calm, mechanical voice.
The ambiguity of the command made him uneasy. What exactly did "enough" mean? How much food would they need to survive the winter?
These were questions he couldn’t answer on his own, so he had turned to Baji and Seishu, his trusted companions. He asked them to bring back as much as they could, hoping it would be sufficient.
In the days that followed, Baji took it upon himself to venture out on hunting expeditions every day, rarely returning empty-handed.
His skills were unmatched, honed by years of surviving in the wild. Seishu, on the other hand, stayed back at the cave, tending to chores and keeping a watchful eye on Takemichi. It was almost like Seishu had taken on the role of protector, ensuring no harm befell him while they prepared for the colder days ahead.
Both Baji and Seishu had always spent their winters in solitude. Baji rarely stayed with his family during this time.
Though he had his mother in a nearby cave, he preferred to hunt and deliver meat to her before retreating to the cave where the tribe's previous leaders once resided.
There, he would spend most of the winter, alone, much like the leaders before him. His survival skills were almost legendary, and his hunting prowess only added to his reputation.
Every time Baji returned from a hunt, his arms were laden with prey, often more than any other hunter in the tribe. Mu Xiang, a spirited young female with a sharp tongue, couldn’t help but tease Takemichi about it.
"Isn’t our tribe leader just incredible?"
She mused, her voice light and playful as she leaned in closer to Takemichi.
"He brings back more prey by himself than my entire family does combined. Right, Takemichi?"
Mu Xiang had five male partners, all skilled hunters in their own right, but even they couldn’t match the efficiency or skill of Baji.
