21 - Surprise

I wake a few hours before sunrise, shaking myself out of another restless slumber.

RUNNING LIKE THE WIND.

I do not want a demonic being spouting out random phrases as if they're ancient proverbs old as time itself. "Please. Be quiet." I've had enough torment for the small hours of the motning.

Why do you not?

Did it just say something coherent?

YOU SHACKLE YOURSELF TO THINGS THAT NO LONGER MATTER. RUN FREE. I CAN HELP

As if a beast like you can aid him at all. I can aid any quest for glory you may have, just-

"It's alright." I sigh quietly, resolving to sit in bed until the sun rises. I've seen your ideas of 'help' already, and it's rather too drastic for my taste.

The power they could lend me throbs against my head as the pitch black eventually recedes.

That is the third night. Two more, and a carriage will arrive to take me back to Aureus castle. Away, once more, from my house - the closest thing to a home I have - away from Ruby.

Even if I have had so little contact since then. She's probably better off without me at any rate - if her letter is to be believed.

The letter I sent was on the day I arrived. It'll have gotten there by now. No, Chester won't be back so soon.

Perhaps I should work on a new shirt, my current ones are starting to wear out. Yes, I'll do that.

Digging into my cloth reserves, I find I'm out of cream-coloured cotton, which means I'll have to weave some more myself. I suppose I can simply wish for it into existence, but cotton fabric, being traditionally weaven on a loom, is complicated to create - I doubt I could keep focus long enough properly. Instead, I spend a good part of the day creating thread and operating the loom, which is more stress-relieving than one might think. The same action, over and over again... it relaxes the mind like little else.

Another good reason to have a dwelling far out from the main town - nobody can find out about your more unconventional hobbies.

"Oh it's Here! I thought you were going Left, didn't know you meant YOUR right."

"It's no pr-"

"Thank you So Much!"

Who's -

"ADI!! STAYING INSIDE ON SUCH A BEAUTIFUL AFTERNOON! HOW COULD YOU!"

Thank the earth, the mountains, sky and stars I wear my shades on a regular basis. It isn't just to shield my eyes - they're also to absorb any lasers that might randomly generate, beyond my control. They need to be discharged into a nickel plate - I know I need to take them off soon when my vision begins to darken.

Well, this is a surprise.

"What are you doing here?"

"Got your letter and thought I'd come visit." he says happily, pulling a stool from the table. "What're you up to?"

My hand instinctively reaches for a hat's brim in an effort to hide the blush; instead I all I find is a handful of messy black hair.

"This." I say, gesturing to the loom.  I'm about three-quarters done.

"Are you making a tapestry?"

Have you ever seen a tapestry made of one single colour? I should think not. "No. Just cloth."
