The Chance Encounter

Part sixteen

Chapter 16

Emma’s POV

We were in the middle of dinner when there was a knock on the door.

“I wonder who that could be?” Mom asks.

“I’ll get it” I say, as I get up and walk towards the front door.

I opened the door shocked to find Regina standing there looking nervous and slightly saddened. “Regina? What’s wrong?” I asked worriedly.

“Cora found out about us and let’s just say she didn’t take it as well as your parents did.” She says softly, looking down.

“Oh. Why don’t you come inside and we can keep talking about this.”

“Did you say Regina is here?” Mom asks, as she makes her way into the living room. “Regina, what happened?” she asks, noticing her sadness. “Let’s get you inside. Would you like something to drink? She asks as she leads her towards the kitchen table.

“Water would be fine, thank you.”

As mom brings her a glass of water, I ask her if she wants to talk about it more.

She begins to tell us what happened.

“Well, I was summoned by Mother this morning. She told me she knew about us and that I should break off our relationship and stop seeing you before she makes me.”

“Who told her? Was it Edward? I trust him, but he was also the only one that knew, aside from maybe Tinkerbell, who I doubt would have dealings with your mother.” I say.

“No, he would never do that. Besides, I hold one of his deepest secrets that could get him fired. He wouldn’t take that risk.”

“Then who else could have told her?” I inquire.

“You know.. There is one more person who knows.” she says, looking away from me. When she looks back into my direction she says, “Katherine has tried to break us up before. Maybe she told my mother about us. Other than her, I can’t think of anyone else. We’ve been very careful about how we meet up, and Edward has done a great job standing guard and covering me.”

“You’re right. I almost forgot about her.”

“I’m sorry. Who is Katherine and why has she tried to break you guys up before?” Mom asks.

“Katherine was the one you met once and told me not to trust her. I didn’t see it back then, but eventually I came to my senses.”

“Ohhh, the manipulative one. That sounds like something she would do.” Mom says as she leans into her palm engaged in our conversation.

“Now you all know as much as I do. Also, I’m kind of on the run from Cora. I would hate to be a bother and put you guys out, but would it be okay for me to stay here a  few nights until I can come up with a plan to get out of this mess?”

“Of course you can, Sweetheart. You can stay as long as you’d like. We were having dinner, would you like to eat with us?”

At this moment I don’t think I’ve admired more than I do now. She’s always kind and willing to help. She’s also a great caretaker.

“I would love to join you all for dinner.”

“Here, let me fix you a plate. You can go clean up some in the meantime.”

After we finish eating, Mom and Dad head up to bed after saying our good nights. I walk with Regina up to my room so she can get settled in.
