It was the newly appointed girls night for JJ, Penelope, Emily and Adeline. Tonight's festivities were to be held at Adeline's apartment. Adeline prepared for their arrival by decorating her entire flat with pink coloured items. Banners, cups, confetti, anything you could buy at the craft store that was pink. She had made a list of cocktails to make for the girls, the first being a woo woo, for the pink colour, of course. As she looked around, she was proud of the effort she had made.
Penelope was the first to arrive. She marvelled at the effort that Adeline had put into the event. She looked at all the decorations that Adeline had bought and made a comment about each of them and how wonderful they were.
As the doorbell chimed once more, Adeline rushed over, her face lighting up as she welcomed JJ and Emily with a warm embrace. The two agents exchanged amused glances as they took in the vibrant pink explosion that Adeline had transformed her apartment into.
"Wow, Adeline, this place is like stepping into a cotton candy dream!" Emily exclaimed, her eyes wide with appreciation. She walked further into the room, her fingers grazing the pink streamers hanging from the ceiling.
JJ laughed, nudging Emily. "And here I thought the only colours Adeline liked were black and green."
Adeline grinned, playfully rolling her eyes. "Hardy har. But I thought I'd shake things up a bit, and nothing says 'girls night' like a splash of pink, right?"
Penelope clinked her glass, already holding a drink Adeline had whipped up. "And might I say, these cocktails are divine! What's in this one?"
Adeline's eyes twinkled with pride as she held up a shaker. "That, my dear Penelope, is a classic woo woo—vodka, peach schnapps, and cranberry juice. Perfectly pink and dangerously delicious."
The women all settled in Adeline's living room. Conversation flowed easily. JJ spoke of Will and her son, praising them but also a little complaining about what has been annoying her lately. She wouldn't change it for the world though. Her life was exactly what she wanted it to be. It was hard balancing a demanding job, a husband, and a child. But, she made it work.
Emily shared some of her stories from moving around the world, what life was like in different countries growing up. She also dished out about a new fella she had met. She didn't see it going anywhere but it has been fun just getting to know a new person.
Penelope was still a bit hung up on Kevin, although she'd never admit it. She told the story of their breakup again, she wondered if he was seeing anyone new.
"That leaves you, Adeline. What's going on in your life?" JJ asks.
Adeline, now onto rose wine, takes a sip. "Um, not a lot. Since the break up, I haven't been seeing anyone. Haven't travelled, as you know since you see me every week. I'm very boring and I am enjoying it."
Emily placed her drink down with a soft clink, her eyes narrowing as she fixed her gaze on Adeline. "Oh, give over. Stop pretending like there hasn't been something with you and the boy genius since day one. This is a safe space, spill the tea."
Adeline was a bit taken aback by Emily's abruptness. She wasn't prepared for the sudden shift in the conversation and for the attention to be so much on her. She could feel JJ and Penelope's eyes on her, both leaning in, their interest piqued by Emily's bold declaration.
"There's nothing—" Adeline began, her voice a little too high, a little too defensive, before Emily cut her off with a knowing look.
"There's nothing going on. Yeah, we've all heard that before," Emily said, her tone teasing but insistent. She moved closer, her eyes glinting with mischief. "So tell us what you really think... Addie."
