My take on Buttons

Au: I'm rambling, this is a ramble, tell me if you hate this kind of chapter.

To preface this, Buttons is my BOY MY SON I LOVE HIM (platonically).

So usually when I see Buttons given his own character in a Newsie fic he's usually just kinda bland, like kind of one of the sunshine squad, but not really. How I personally see Buttons is, he's the sassy aunt who talks crap and gossips and I love him. He's not against a big group tussle, like he doesn't want one nearly as bad as the others do but he isn't horribly opposed, however if it's like boys pushing, shoving and kicking to get food from the nuns then he'll just kinda,

"You know, I wasn't that hungry anyway, I'll just have a big lunch." He also doesn't do most of the stupid crap that most of the others do, but he's also in no way the voice of reason, example; Race is about to slide a mattress off the roof with him on it.

Jack: Race! If you slide down on that thing then you're on cleaning duty for a week. And no rolling double or nothing for it! It's not that I don't trust you, I just don't trust the dice you roll!
Davey: RACE! RACE! RACE! DONT RACE!
Specs (tired of dealing with something like this every other day): Do it, I dare you, see what happens
Buttons (watching intently): I'm not doing it, but I'm not gonna stop ya. LES WAIT NO.

Also importantly, he does care about what the littles do, he's not a great influence, but he will 100% smack Race upside the head if he were to offer Les a cigar, mainly because of years of being a middle child and needing to help his younger siblings. Also whenever Race, Jack, or Davey are busy Buttons defaults to being the one to talk to him (once again bc of the sibling thing but also) because in King of New York when Les has "almost about to drown in the drink" Buttons immediately follows with "when she fished us out" like he's goofing off with Les and that's beautiful to me. Thank you.

So how was that? Please tell me if you hated that, because if you don't tell me, then I will write more. I also hope to be able to write more, even though I know that I'm super way too busy to be writing a lot. ALSO quick PSA to all fanfic authors who want to do anything with Buttons, he doesn't have a mother, we don't know what happened to her, but trust me it's implied, if you need clarification then I will oblige.
