It's been about a month and a half since we joined the farm. I'm glad I decided to stay here instead of trying to find Jace. I still think about him all of the time and I hope him and his wife and my niece are okay but if we are meant to find them, we will. I've gotten really close with Carol and honestly even with Daryl. That day at the shop brought us together, it's probably trauma bonding but we've done a lot of the runs together. According to Hershel's calendar, it's the second week of November so we have about six weeks before things get really cold. Lately it feels like it's been in the sixties, maybe the fifties at night. Good thing about the south is temps don't get too cold, but we have been stocking up on supplies just in case.
Right now, me, Zach, Beth, and Carol are out strolling the woods for berries. Hershel's says this will likely be our last harvest of the season because it's getting too cold for the berry bushes to survive for the rest of the year.
"You know what I was thinking?" Zach smiles.
"What's that?" Carol smiles as she picks some berries off of a bush.
"You should make mom's famous black berry muffins." Zach smiles.
"Ooo you should!" Beth cheers.
"We should have everything you need back at the farm." Carol smiles and I nod.
"I can do that." I smile and grab some berries. We've collected a lot over the last few weeks, we make jam and can some. We are pretty stocked, I'm grateful. Not many people can say that these days.
"Ah!" Beth screams as a walker pops out of the bush she was just picking from. I run over after dropping my bucket and push it away from her. I go to stab it when another one grabs my ankle from inside another bush, causing me to fall down.
"Frick." I mumble to myself and reach for my knife. I kick the one holding my ankle off, quickly standing up and stabbing the other one in the head and Carol takes care of the one in the bush that grabbed my ankle.
"You okay? Are you hurt?" I look at Beth as I put my knife back into my belt.
"I'm okay!" She sighs. "Thank you." She hugs me tightly.
"Of course." I smile. "I'm just glad you're okay."
"Are you okay?" Carol looks at me and I nod.
"Yeah don't you guys know? I'm invincible." I start fake flexing causing all of them to laugh.
"Well let's go head back, I think we've collected everything we can and I'm sure breakfast is almost ready." Carol smiles and I nod in agreement. We head back to the farm house and I take the berries into the kitchen and wash them as Beth explains to Hershel what happened. Beth, Carl, and Zach have this innocence about them that I want them to keep as long as possible.
Before breakfast I decided to go into my room and change my pants since they're covered in mud and blood from the walkers hands. I reach into my bag and pull out new pants and sit on my bed. I slide my pants off and wince a bit as they hit my lower leg.
"What the heck? Why did that hurt?" I look down at my leg and my heart stops when I see a bite mark on my leg.
"no no no no no no." I start freaking out quietly. "This can't be happening! I didn't even feel myself get bit." I sigh. I decide to wrap it in a bandage and put my pants on, I'm not going to say anything. I don't want to die, I refuse to die. I take a deep breath and head downstairs to join everyone for breakfast. I look around for an open spot and see the one open next to Daryl. I walk over and sit down next to him.
"I heard what happened. You okay?" He looks at me and I quickly nod.
"Yeah." I smile. "Just two walkers, light work." I joke as I make myself a plate. I can't make eye contact with him, I'm gonna start tearing up and he'll know that something is off.
