Who is she to you?

Hanni POV:

I've been trying for days now. Subtle nudges, light probing questions. I want to see it—who Minji really is underneath that perfect, calm surface she puts on. I know she's hiding something, and I'm desperate to see it.

But she's so good at pretending. So good at making me think she's nothing more than the sweet, shy girl everyone sees her as. Every time I push, she just laughs it off or redirects the conversation.

She doesn't slip. Not even once.

It's infuriating.

Today is no different. We're sitting across from each other in the library, a bio textbook open between us. I'm supposed to be helping her with this chapter, but my mind is elsewhere, on her. On the version of her I know exists but can't quite reach.

Minji looks up from the page, her brow furrowing in concentration. "So, how does photosynthesis work again?"

Her voice is soft, innocent. Too innocent. It keeps making me question if she is even capable of what I think she is.

I force a smile, leaning over to point at the diagram. "It's about the chlorophyll in the plant's cells, remember? It absorbs the sunlight and—"No. This is wrong. I can't focus on photosynthesis right now. I need her to slip.

I clear my throat. "Actually, Minji, I've been thinking... do you ever feel like people are hiding things from you?"

Her eyes flicker for a moment, barely noticeable, but I catch it. She tilts her head, feigning curiosity. "Hiding things? Like secrets?"

I nod, holding her gaze, hoping to see something crack. "Yeah. Don't you think it's strange when people act one way but feel another?"

She laughs lightly, leaning back in her chair. "I guess so. But everyone has their secrets, right?"

I bite the inside of my cheek, trying to keep my frustration in check. She's too calm. Too perfect. It's driving me insane.

I push a little harder. "Have you ever wanted to know someone's secret so badly that you'd do anything to find out?"

Minji's eyes flicker again, but she doesn't break. "I mean, sure, curiosity gets the best of all of us sometimes. But some things are better left unknown, don't you think?"

No. Not for me. I have to know.

I don't get the chance to respond because my phone vibrates on the table. I glance at the screen and feel a pang of irritation.

It's my mom.

"Sorry, I have to take this," I say, standing up and moving a few steps away.

When I answer, her voice is bright, cheerful. "Hey, sweetie! I just wanted to remind you that Sullyoon's flight is landing soon. Don't forget to pick her up, okay?"I blink, my mind spinning.

Sullyoon? I haven't thought about her in ages. She's this family friend who I used to hang out with sometimes, but it's been years. Why now?

"Uh, yeah, sure, Mom," I mumble, glancing back at Minji, who's watching me with that same calm smile.

"Great! Oh, and be nice, she hasn't been to town in a while," my mom adds before hanging up.

I sigh and slip my phone back into my pocket. "Sorry about that."

"No worries," Minji says easily, but her eyes are a little sharper now. "Who's Sullyoon?"

"Just an old family friend," I reply, trying to sound casual, but I can see the way Minji's expression changes. For just a split second, her smile falters.

Gotcha.

Minji POV:

Sullyoon? Who is Sullyoon? My heart twists in an unfamiliar way, but I keep my smile in place, refusing to let it show. Hanni's old family friend. Just a friend. There's nothing to worry about. But still... the way Hanni's face softened when she mentioned her name, who is Sullyoon to her?

I push the thought away. I have to stay focused. I can't afford to let jealousy get in the way of my plan. Hanni doesn't suspect a thing, and I need to keep it that way.

But now, there's a new player in the game. Sullyoon. I need to know who she is. After we wrap up our study session, I watch Hanni leave the library, her figure disappearing through the doors. My mind races, filled with thoughts of this girl. I have to find out everything. And fast.

Hanni POV:

By the time I get to the airport, I've almost forgotten about the bio session with Minji. Almost.I scan the arrivals board and spot Sullyoon's flight number. My heart starts racing, but it's not because of her. It's because I keep replaying the look in Minji's eyes when I mentioned Sullyoon. There was something there, something dark, possessive. I know it. I'm not imagining things.

But I need her to slip, and today wasn't enough. I'll have to push harder next time.

As I wait by the terminal, I feel a tap on my shoulder. I turn around and see Sullyoon smiling brightly, her eyes wide with excitement.

"Hanni! It's been forever!" she exclaims, pulling me into a hug.

I return the hug, though my mind is elsewhere. "Yeah, it's been a while."

We chat as we head to the car, but my thoughts keep drifting back to Minji. I glance at Sullyoon out of the corner of my eye. She's beautiful, in that effortless way that makes everyone notice her. But I don't care about that. What I care about is how Minji reacted when I said her name.

When we reach my car, Sullyoon turns to me, her smile softening. "So, tell me... what's been going on with you? Anyone special in your life?"

My stomach flips. I can't help but think of Minji. I shrug, trying to act nonchalant. "There's someone. Kind of."

Her eyes sparkle with curiosity. "Oh? Who?"

I hesitate for a second, then decide to tell her. "Her name's Minji."

Sullyoon raises an eyebrow, clearly interested. "And? How's that going?"

I laugh, though it feels forced. "It's... complicated."

She grins knowingly. "Aren't they always?"

We both laugh, but inside, I'm screaming. I have to know what Minji's hiding. And I'll do whatever it takes to find out.
