Taehyung sat outside the operation room, his entire body tense, his heart pounding erratically in his chest. His hands were clenched into tight fists, resting on his knees as he leaned forward, elbows digging into his thighs.
His breath came in short, shallow bursts as if the air around him had thinned and he was struggling to breathe. The sound of his pulse roared in his ears, drowning out the hum of hospital activity around him. He couldn't focus on anything but the sterile, white door in front of him, behind which the love of his life was fighting for hers.
Tears threatened to spill from his bloodshot eyes, but he fought them back, his jaw clenched so tightly that his teeth ached. He replayed the scene in his head over and over, the way her eyes had widened with determination, how she had thrown herself in front of him, how she had taken the bullet that was meant for him. His mind screamed at him, punishing him for his failure to protect her.
"Why... why did you do it?" he whispered under his breath, his voice cracking. His chest heaved with the weight of his emotions, his hands trembling uncontrollably. "That bullet... it should have been me."
His thoughts raced back to that moment-how everything had moved so fast and yet so slowly. He remembered the look in her eyes when she turned to face him, the fear, the love, the desperation. And then the sound of the gunshot echoed in his mind like a nightmare that wouldn't fade. Her body had crumpled into his arms, and her blood... there had been so much blood. His hands were still stained with it. He looked down at them, the red smudges on his skin like a cruel reminder of how close he had come to losing her.
"You... you should've let me take it," he muttered, voice thick with anguish. "You didn't have to protect me, Y/N."
The image of her falling in front of him was burned into his memory. He couldn't erase the way she had gasped for breath, her eyes wide in pain as he held her, powerless. For all his strength, for all his power, he couldn't stop it. He couldn't save her when it mattered most. His entire world had revolved around keeping her safe, and in the end, she had been the one to save him. And it tore him apart.
His anger surged suddenly, mixing with the overwhelming guilt that gnawed at his insides. His fists slammed into the armrests of the chair, a growl escaping his throat. "Damn it!" he hissed through gritted teeth, his eyes flashing with rage. Rage at himself. Rage at Jimin. Rage at the world for putting them in this situation.
"How could I let this happen?!" he growled under his breath, the words spilling out in frustration. He had promised her that nothing would happen to her. He swore that he would protect her from everything. But when it came down to it, he had failed. He had been too late. His grip on his power, on his control, had slipped through his fingers at the worst possible moment.
His eyes flicked to the bloodstains on his shirt, the deep crimson that had soaked through as he carried her. The sight of it made his stomach churn, and his heart splinter even more. He had never felt so powerless, so useless.
The door to the operating room remained closed, and the clock on the wall seemed to tick slower with every passing second. Each moment that passed without word from the doctors felt like an eternity, and Taehyung's heart tightened with dread. The possibility that she might not survive this... he couldn't even think about it. The idea of losing her, of never hearing her voice again, never feeling her warmth beside him-it was unbearable.
"Please," he whispered to no one in particular, his voice breaking, "Please, let her be okay. I can't... I can't lose her."
His head dropped into his hands, and for the first time in years, Taehyung allowed himself to cry. His shoulders shook with the weight of his emotions, his chest tightening painfully as the sobs wracked his body. All his power, all his wealth, none of it meant anything in this moment. The only thing that mattered was her.
