It had been six months since the events that nearly claimed Phoenix's life. Six months since the love of her life had proposed to her. The wedding had been set for January 17th, which was only two weeks away now, and the time had come for Phoenix to go dress shopping.
Again.
Truthfully, she'd already been to a number of different dress shops in the past two months, and she hadn't seen a single one that felt right. They were too frilly, too sparkly, too big, too tight, or a plethora of other things.
Phoenix had brought Kate along every single time, but all the blonde ever said was "You look beautiful" or "That's the one". While Phoenix may have looked beautiful in them, she needed someone that would tell her exactly how it made her look.
She needed someone that would give it to her straight, that would tell her it didn't suit her, or that it definitely wasn't her style. Lily and Dani definitely weren't those people, Dexter absolutely would just tell her that she looked beautiful and would undoubtedly start crying at every dress, which didn't leave many people that she knew.
She obviously couldn't bring Tyler, who would be the best person to actually bring, so she was left with Boone and Javi. Javi would always tell her that she looked awful, which was actually what she needed, and Boone would give it to her straight.
So here she was, standing outside the last dress shop she had on her list that wasn't an absurdly far distance away waiting for the two men. They finally arrived together, already bickering like an old married couple, which had been the normal for about four months now.
"There she is!" Boone greeted as he got out the car, immediately hugging the woman tightly. "Hey, Boone" Phoenix whispered into his shoulder. "What's wrong?" Boone instantly knew something was up and he pulled away, holding her by the shoulders. Phoenix had no words to describe how she was feeling, so she simply sighed and looked down.
"You nervous?" Boone asked, tilting her chin up. "Yeah. What if I don't find the one?" Phoenix asked quietly. "Hey. You could turn up in a fuckin' trash bag and Tyler would still wanna marry you. Stop thinking about 'the perfect one' and start thinking about what makes you feel good. Okay?" Boone tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Have I told you how much I love your longer hair?" Boone said randomly and Phoenix chuckled. "Only every day since I started growing it out" Phoenix replied. "Alright, I parked the car" Javi finally came over to them and Phoenix smiled.
"Hey" she gave him a fist bump. "Ready to go in?" Javi asked. "Yeah. Yeah, totally" Phoenix lied unconvincingly and Javi raised his eyebrows. "Okay, come on" Javi placed a hand on her shoulder and steered her inside as Boone laughed behind them.
After getting checked in, the worker led them into a fitting area where some dresses were already hung up along the wall. "Feel free to try them on as many times as you want, if you need any help just come and get me" the worker smiled before pulling the curtain closed.
"Alright, um..." Phoenix trailed off seeing all of the dresses, quickly becoming overwhelmed. "Try this one" Javi immediately went over to a dress and handed it to her. "O-okay" Phoenix nodded, pulling the curtain closed behind her.
She hung the dress up before slipping off her shirt and jeans. She tried her best not to look in the mirror but she caught a glance of the fresh scars that covered her body. The tornado in El Reno really did a number on her body.
She took a deep breath, choosing to focus on the quiet conversation that Boone and Javi were having on the other side of the curtain. She pulled the dress on, finding it to fit perfectly which meant she didn't even need the clips on the back, and she kept her eyes closed for a moment.
