Rose
I woke up at 7 o'clock on the first day of my vacation. After taking a shower, I returned to my room and found my mom sitting on my bed. I approached her, feeling a bit puzzled.
“Hey, good morning. What are you doing here?” I asked, confused by her unexpected presence and curious about what she wanted to say.
"Your father called me yesterday," she said with a worried expression. My father has never been involved in our lives—he doesn’t care about me or my mom. But somehow, he still pretends to be concerned, only to end up being controlling. "He said you're not getting a proper education."
“Can you just get to the point?” I replied, trying to cut the conversation short.
"He wants me to transfer you to another school. He said that, as his daughter, you deserve the best education a school can offer."
"My school is one of the best in the country. That doesn’t make any sense," I replied, confused.
“I know, but he wants you to study at the best, not just one of them,” she said, looking me in the eyes and holding my hands. “He wants you to go to Brandão Academy. That’s where he studied when he was younger.”
Of course, I should’ve known. Every time I saw my father, he would ramble on about how Brandão Academy had the best education in the country and how I should be studying there.
“Okay, and?” I asked, feeling certain my mom knew I had no intention of changing schools.
“I’ve already enrolled you,” she said softly, letting go of my hands.
"Wait, what? Why? I don’t want to go there!" I shouted, my heart racing with anger.
“We have no choice, love.” She tried to approach me, but I stepped back, furious.
“Why? Just tell him no! I’m not going to some school full of spoiled brats,” I snapped, crossing my arms.
“Listen, Roseanne, you have to. Your father said that if I don’t transfer you, he’s going to take legal custody of you.” She looked down as she spoke.
"How? He can’t do that," I protested, disbelief clouding my mind.
“He can. He threatened me, saying that since I travel so much for work, you’re left alone too often. He’s also collected documents, trying to prove that my job isn’t appropriate for raising a teenager and that you’d be better off with him.” She tried to hold back her tears.
I’d almost never seen my mother cry—only when she laughed too hard or watched sad movies about abandoned dogs. But this… this was different. I knew she was serious.
I sat down on my bed, feeling dizzy with rage, my mind swirling with all the insults I wanted to hurl at my father.
"I’ll talk to him. That insufferable old man isn’t going to control my life,” I said, jumping to my feet.
"Please, don’t." My mother’s voice cracked as tears started streaming down her face, soaking the carpet beneath her. "Please, I can’t lose you."
I rushed to her. “You won’t. We’ll always be together,” I said, wiping away her tears. “Don’t be afraid.”
My father didn’t care about me or my education. All he wanted was to hurt my mother, to feel like he still had power over her because she didn’t want him anymore.
“Please, Rosie, it’s just two years. Once you finish school, we’ll travel the world. And if you want, we can leave this place forever,” she pleaded.
I closed my eyes, feeling an overwhelming urge to scream, to shout every curse I knew at my father. But instead, I took a few deep breaths, trying to steady myself.
“Okay, Mom. I’ll do it.”
