Rosé

I left the building, trying to catch my breath and distance myself from everything. I walked through the yard and stopped under a tree.

"This is all my father's fault. That fossil could just die already, and I'm sure no one would care," I muttered to myself.

Suddenly, I heard the sound of a branch snapping. I looked up and saw a girl falling. Or so I thought. In reality, she jumped down beside me, nearly knocking me over as she lost her balance for a moment.

"What the fuck? If you're planning on killing yourself, at least give me a heads-up so I can move out of the way!" I snapped, placing a hand on my chest, trying to calm my racing heart after the scare. "God, is everyone in this school crazy?"

"I don't know. I'm new here. Sorry about that," she replied, looking a little embarrassed. "My name's Lisa, nice to meet you," she said, extending her hand.

"I'm Rosé. I'm also new," I said, shaking her hand. "What were you doing up in that tree?" I glanced up, realizing how tall it was. Not everyone could climb that high; she must be athletic or something.

"I needed some fresh air. Inside, I couldn't even breathe with all those people," she explained, crossing her arms and putting emphasis on the word 'people.'

"That's exactly what I thought when I got here," I said, smiling, feeling like I'd finally found someone in the same situation as me.

"Being new is hard anywhere," she shrugged.

"Especially here," I replied.

"Come on, look how nice it is out here. It's not that bad," Lisa said, glancing around.

"It is," I shot back.

"So why are you here?" Lisa asked, placing her hands on her hips.

"My father forced my mom to enroll me here," I said, crossing my arms, feeling the anger rise as I thought about him.

"Oh lord, family issues. Let's change the subject," she said, running her fingers through her hair.

"Well, I..." I stopped mid-sentence when I heard the sound of a horn blaring. I turned around and saw a boy with pink hair driving one of those golf carts, heading straight for us. He was dressed in ridiculously colorful clothes, like a clown. This guy clearly loved being the center of attention.

"Who is he?" I asked Lisa.

"That's Richard Collins. He's been all over me since I got here—completely unbearable," she whispered, trying to hide behind me, but it didn't work.

He pulled up next to us, beaming from ear to ear as he jumped out of the cart.

"Girls!" he said, laughing loudly as he got way too close for comfort, leaning in and invading my personal space. "Hi, I'm Ric—"

"Richard, I already know," I interrupted, pushing him back a bit.

He laughed even louder. "Ah, you must've heard about me." Lisa and I exchanged a glance, trying to suppress our laughter. "You girls are in luck! I just bought some wine that's even better than the French stuff," he said, dramatically removing his sunglasses. "And since I'll be alone in my room, I figured, being the nice guy I am, I'd invite you both to join me for a drink. What do you say?"

"Thanks so much, but we'd rather drink a Jack and Coke," I said, grabbing Lisa's hand and walking away. "Enjoy your wine. Byeee!"
