Ana burst through the door, calling out for her brother. "Ray! Rayyyy! Where are you?" Her voice echoed through the empty hallway.
"I'm here, baby sis," Ray replied from the kitchen, his warm smile visible through the doorway. "No need to shout."
Ana dropped her bag on the dining table with a thud, eager to share her news. "Oh, Ray, I have so much to tell you!" Her eyes sparkled.
Ray smiled, arranging lunch for Ana. The aroma of freshly cooked food wafted through the air. "I know, I know. But first, how was your math test?" His brow furrowed.
Ana's grin faltered, her eyes darting down. "I passed... by 5 marks." Her voice barely above a whisper.
Ray raised an eyebrow, his expression a mix of surprise and concern. "5 marks? You got 32/100? How?" He walked closer, his footsteps soft.
Ana looked down, shame washing over her. "I'm sorry, Ray. I'll do better next time." Her voice cracked.
Ray's expression softened. He pulled Ana into a warm hug, his familiar scent comforting her. "I know you will. You have to." His voice gentle.
As they ate in silence, the only sound the clinking of utensils, Ray broke the tension. "Ana, I need to tell you something." His tone serious.
"What is it, Ray?" Ana's curiosity piqued, her eyes locking onto his.
"I have a mission in two days. I'll be gone for a month." Ray's words hung in the air.
Ana's face fell, tears welling up. "How will I live without you for a month?" Her voice trembling.
Ray enveloped her in another tight hug. "I have to save some girls your age. They were kidnapped." His voice cracked.
Ana's concern shifted, her grip on Ray's arm tightening. "Why do you have to go? You know I need you." Desperation creeping in.
Ray's eyes locked onto hers, his voice firm. "If anything happens to me, my friends will take care of you. Trust me, Ana. I won't let you suffer." His jaw set.
(Ten years ago, they lost their parents in an accident. Ray, 15 at the time, became Ana's guardian, her rock.)
"I love you too, Ray. Okay, go save them, but take care and come back soon. I won't survive without my idiot brother." Ana's smile wobbled.
Ray chuckled, his eyes crinkling.
One week later, Ana's world shattered. Ray's friends arrived at her doorstep, bearing devastating news: Ray had died on mission.
"Rayyyyyyyyyy!! Noooooo!" Ana woke up, realizing it was just a dream... or was it? The reality hit her - it was her brother's funeral.
