The late afternoon sun streamed through the window as Taylor Reyes sat on her bed, scrolling through her phone. The air was thick with tension, a feeling that had become all too familiar since her younger brother Noti had passed away. Just then, her girlfriend, Jenn, burst into the room, her energy contrasting sharply with the somber atmosphere.
"Hey, Tay! You won't believe the track we just laid down!" Jenn exclaimed, her eyes shining with excitement.
Taylor looked up, her brow furrowing. "What track? Is it another diss track? You know how I feel about that."
Jenn shrugged, a smirk playing on her lips. "It's just a bit of fun, babe. You know Noti would've loved it. It's all in good spirit!"
"Good spirit? Jenn, you're dissing my brother!" Taylor said, her voice rising. "It's not just a game to me."
Just then, footsteps echoed down the hall, and Jstar, Jay and Dd, Taylor's older brothers, entered the room, their expressions serious. "What's going on in here?" Jstar asked, crossing his arms, seeing as an opp was standing in his little sister's room.
"Nothing.." Taylor said, her tone clipped. She'd completely forgotten about her brothers being in the house today.
Dd raised an eyebrow, glaring at Jenn. "You're still messing around with her? After everything?"
"Come on, guys! It's not like that," Taylor interjected, protective of Jenn. "She's my girlfriend."
"Girlfriend or not, she's disrespecting Noti's memory," Jstar said sharply. "You really think it's okay to fuck around with a opp?"
"Opp? Man get the fuck outta here with that nobody worried about y'all ," Jenn chimed in. "You niggas act like he wasn't dissing first."
"Who told yo bitch ass to talk" Dd shot back. "Have you thought about how this affects our family, Tay?"
Jenn stepped forward, her confidence wavering slightly. "I didn't know you sugarhill niggas was so soft about shit, stop crying inna stu and get back." Jenn scoffed pushing past them and out the front door.
Taylor shook her head, frustration bubbling over. "You two don't get it, I'd never treat your partners like this! Why can't you just respect Jenn and our relationship? you were cool with her being around before."
"Respect? Tay your literally dating someone who made fun of our brothers death!" Jstar scoffed. "You're letting her manipulate you with whatever bullshit of hers."
"No, she's not I'm not a fucking kid anymore I'm not being manipulated!" Taylor shouted, tears pooling in her eyes. "I care about Jenn, and I don't need you guys judging me for that!"
"Taylor, we're only looking out for you," Dd said, his tone softening. "But you have to see the bigger picture."
Jstar took a step back, his anger fading. "Tay until you can come to your regular sense, don't talk to me."
"Jay are you serious?" Taylor snapped, her heart pounding. "You can't be serious"
The room fell silent, tension hanging in the air. Finally, Dd spoke softly, "I know you don't wanna hear this right now, but you don't understand you dating somebody who made a song dissing and making fun of our dead brother..that shit ain't weird to you?."
Taylor sighed, her shoulders slumping. "I know it's weird it's just... I miss him, and it feels like everyone is either trying to forget or make things worse by killing others. I don't want to lose you or Jay or Jstar, but I don't know how to handle this."
Dd uncrossed his arms, his expression softening. "He just wants you to be happy and safe. But we also want to honor Noti's memory and you dating Jenn isn't honoring him."
Taylor nodded in agreement. "I need to find a way to balance this. Maybe it's time me and Jenn broke up.."
Taylor glanced at Dd , whose eyes were filled with sympathy. "If that's what you truly believe in doing and is what you want," he said quietly. "I want to." Taylor mumble.
Taylor took a deep breath, feeling the weight on her chest begin to lift. "Okay. I'm gonna text her now, the more I wait the more it'll hurt to get over..."
"I love you Tay," Dd said, pulling her into a hug. "Jay just wants what's best for you."
As Taylor embraced her brother, she glanced at her phone, which showcased a picture of Jenn and her smiling while holding hand and hand. "I love you too Dd" Tay said.
Taylor nodded, feeling a mix of relief and determination. She had a long way to go to make it up to Jstar, but with help from Dd, she could find a way to bridge the gap between them, and the memories that would always remain.
