Second part of love in the shadows

The next morning, I went in the hospital to check on the man that yesterday I helped. His pale face, his haunting brown eyes were still lingered in my mind. As I walked through the corridors, I realized that I didn't even asked for his room number. I was so busy trying to find out how he was doing that it slipped my mind.

I approached the nurses' station, but I felt something strange. "Excuse me" I said, catching the attention of a nurse who was typing at her computer. "Oh, good morning Dr Y/l/n. Tell me how I can help you" "The man who was brought in last night, from the accident? I didn't get his room number. Can you tell me where he's staying?" I ask her. The nurse glanced me, her face immediately shifted from polite curiosity to something darker. "You mean the man you saved? We've been trying to locate him all morning" she said, slightly. "He... disappeared."

My heart for a second stopped beating. "D-disappeared? How is that even possible?" I ask incredulous. "We really don't know how happened. He was in the room when we last checked. My colleague this morning entered and room was empty. No signs of struggle, nothing. Like no one stayed there. We're searching the entire hospital, but it's like he just... vanished" she explained me. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. My heart began to race and I gripped the edge of the counter.

"What do you mean vanished? Patients don't walk out the of hospitals unnoticed" The nurse looked over her shoulder before speaking, as she didn't want anyone else to hear. "We checked the security cameras. No one saw him leave. It's like he wasn't even here". My mind spun, and I felt a mix of panic and disbelief. How could someone disappear completely? The way yesterday he was wounded can't permit to walk away on his own. "If there is any news about this, let me know" I say. "I will, don't worry" she says and I left the hospital.

My thoughts were spiraling. The cool morning air hit me as I stepped outside, but it did cleared my mind a little. How could this have happened? My footsteps echoed on the pavement, but I felt like I wasn't alone. My heartbeat quickened. A strange sensation crept down my spine, like eyes were on me, watching from the shadows. I looked around but I didn't see anything. Yet the sensation didn't leave me. I tried to breath to calm myself. Maybe it was just my imagination. But deep down, I couldn't shake the feeling.

Someone- or something- was watching me...
