It had always been me and Kirk. From the moment we met, we just clicked, like two souls who somehow found their way to each other. Kirk was the calm, quiet type, always lost in his music. He had this deep, soulful presence about him, and I think that's what drew me in right from the start. We weren't childhood friends, but once we met, it felt like we'd known each other forever.
He was the one who introduced me to the guys—James, Lars, and Cliff. Together, they formed a band, and that's when everything changed. James, the frontman, had this magnetic energy about him, full of life and confidence. Everyone in the room seemed to fall under his spell, including me. It wasn't long before James and I were together, and for a while, I thought I was living the dream. But I didn't realize that the real dream had always been standing right beside me in Kirk.
Things with James started out like a perfect storm—wild and exciting, full of passion and unpredictability. I loved it at first. I loved being part of the world he created, a world filled with music, late-night shows, and wild parties. But James lived in the fast lane, and the faster we went, the more I started to feel like I was losing myself.
Kirk saw it. He never said anything, but I could feel the weight of his gaze on me whenever I was with James. I could feel how much it hurt him to watch me get lost in something that wasn't good for me. Still, he never pushed me. He just stayed by my side, waiting.
Everything came crashing down one night after a gig. James had been distant for weeks, disappearing after shows, caught up in the whirlwind of the band's growing fame. That night, as I stood outside waiting for him, I saw him in the alley, wrapped around some girl. They were laughing, his hands all over her in a way that made my stomach turn.
I didn't confront him. I didn't scream or make a scene. I just walked away.
I found myself at the apartment the guys shared. It was a cramped, messy place, but it had always felt like a second home to me. Kirk was out back, strumming his guitar under the stars, his face illuminated by the soft glow of the night. The sight of him there, so peaceful, so steady, made the ache in my chest even worse.
He looked up as I approached, his brow furrowed with concern. "Hey," he said softly, setting his guitar aside. "What happened?"
I sat down next to him, staring up at the stars, trying to hold back the tears. "I saw him," I whispered, my voice barely audible. "With someone else."
Kirk didn't say anything at first. He just sat there, his presence warm and grounding. After a moment, he sighed, his voice gentle. "I'm sorry. You deserve so much more than that."
I looked over at him, my heart heavy. "Why didn't you ever say anything? Why didn't you tell me what was going on?"
He met my gaze, his eyes soft and filled with a kind of emotion I had never noticed before—something deeper than friendship. "Because I couldn't," he said quietly. "I couldn't tell you how I felt when you were with him."
I felt a rush of warmth spread through me as I held his gaze, realizing how much I had missed. "I was so stupid," I admitted, my voice shaking. "I didn't see you were in love with me. If I had paid more attention, I could have noticed it. But I was so wrapped up in James and his world that I didn't see what was right in front of me."
Kirk took my hands in his, his touch sending a shiver down my spine. "I've loved you for so long," he admitted, his voice thick with emotion. "I tried to keep it to myself because I didn't want to lose you, but it's been so hard watching you with him."
My breath caught in my throat as his words sank in. All this time, Kirk had been in love with me, and I hadn't even seen it. I had been so caught up in James's world that I missed what was right in front of me.
"I never knew that all along, heaven was right beside me," I whispered, my heart racing.
With my heart racing, I leaned in, planting a soft kiss on his lips—a tentative brush at first, but then something ignited between us. I felt his hands tighten around mine, pulling me closer as the kiss deepened, turning passionate and urgent. It was as if all the unspoken feelings between us were finally breaking free, and I kissed him back with the same intensity, realizing that I had been waiting for this too, even if I hadn't known it.
When we finally pulled apart, we were both breathless, our foreheads resting together as we sat in the quiet of the night. Kirk whispered, "You know, they say sometimes you have to look to the stars to find your way back home."
I smiled, the warmth of his words wrapping around me like a soft embrace. "Maybe heaven isn't a place we go, but a feeling we find with the people we love."
Kirk nodded, his eyes shining as he brushed a strand of hair behind my ear. I took a deep breath, feeling the weight of my words. "You know, heaven is beside you, Kirk. It always has been."
His expression softened, a mix of surprise and joy lighting up his face. "You really mean that?"
"I do," I replied softly, my heart swelling as I gazed into his eyes.
As we sat there under the vast expanse of stars, I felt a sense of peace wash over me. This was a new beginning—a love that had always been there, waiting for the right moment to blossom. Together, we would navigate whatever came next, knowing that we had each other.
