I stood by the entrance of the ER, my eyes tracking Kevin and Michaela as they moved with practiced efficiency. The urgency of the situation with the child—whom I later learned was named Sophie—seemed to drive them both, their faces set with determination. Kevin's focus was unwavering as he prepped for surgery, and Michaela, though tired, exuded a calm, practiced assurance. It was clear they worked well together.

As they entered the OR, a pang of jealousy twisted in my chest. Seeing Michaela and Kevin so absorbed in their work together, the way they communicated and moved in sync, stirred something deep within me. I had to remind myself that they were professionals and that their collaboration was crucial for Sophie's care. Despite the surge of envy, I understood the necessity of their teamwork. Their skills were needed to save a life, and that was more important than my personal feelings.

I was about to return to my station when I spotted Rocky chatting with Lexi in the hallway. They seemed to be in their own world, laughing and exchanging glances that spoke volumes. It was evident that there was a connection between them, something deeper than mere friendship. They looked good together, and I couldn't deny that Rocky seemed to be genuinely happy around her.

My thoughts were interrupted by Adrianna, who appeared beside me with a presence that was hard to ignore. Her dress, a deep red that clung in all the right places, left little to the imagination. She flashed a bright smile, though her eyes were hard to read.

"Miguel," she said, her voice smooth and melodic. "Are you coming to the family dinner tonight?"

I shook my head, feeling a sense of relief at the thought of avoiding another round of forced socialization. "No, I'll be passing on it. I've got some things to take care of here."

Adrianna's smile faltered slightly, but she quickly recovered, stepping closer. "Come on, Miguel. It's been a while since we've all gathered together. It'd be nice to catch up. Plus, you know how my family misses you."

I met her gaze, steady and unyielding. "Adrianna, I appreciate the invitation, but I don't think it's a good idea. And, just to be clear, don't expect us to rekindle anything. We've both moved on."

Her eyes flashed with a mix of frustration and determination, but she didn't let it show too much. "I see. Well, it's your choice. But you should know that I still have feelings for you, Miguel. I'm not giving up that easily."

I sighed, knowing this conversation could easily turn into a lengthy debate I wasn't interested in having. "Adrianna, I've been back for a while now, and I've had time to think. I'm not the same person I was before, and neither are you. It's best if we both move on."

Adrianna looked like she wanted to argue more, but the arrival of a nurse with an urgent message seemed to cut the conversation short. With a final, lingering glance, she turned and walked away, leaving me to my thoughts.

I shook my head, trying to clear my mind of the lingering complexities of my past. I glanced back at Rocky and Lexi, still chatting in the hallway, their connection a stark contrast to the tension with Adrianna. I couldn't deny it—seeing Rocky and Lexi together made me hopeful. Maybe, just maybe, there was a chance for genuine connections amidst all the drama.

I settled into my station, the familiar hum of the hospital serving as a backdrop to my thoughts. After Adrianna's departure, I found a moment to check my phone. I opened Instagram, my fingers swiping through the feed absentmindedly. I had an idea in mind—search for Michaela. I was curious about her life outside the hospital, wanting to understand more about the person who had so unexpectedly captured my attention.

When I found her profile, I was struck by the warmth and vibrancy of her posts. There were pictures of her at the beach, her laughter caught in the sunlight. Images of her with her friends, their smiles infectious and full of joy. And then, there were the photos with her grandmother, Dorothy. They radiated a deep bond and affection. Michaela's smile was genuine and captivating, a reflection of her spirit.

Without overthinking, I followed her and reacted to a few photos—hoping she wouldn't find it too forward. As I was caught up in this, Rocky strolled into the station, his usual easy grin on his face.

"Checking out Michaela's Insta?" he teased, noticing the look on my face.

I chuckled, a bit embarrassed at being caught. "Yeah, just curious. She seems to have a great life outside of work."

Rocky raised an eyebrow, a knowing smirk on his lips. "Smitten much?"

I laughed, shaking my head. "I'll admit it. There was something about her from the moment I saw her in the grocery store. She had this aura even in scrubs. It was hard not to be intrigued."

Rocky's eyes lit up with amusement. "You're not the only one with eyes for her. I've seen how you look at her."

I glanced up just as Lexi walked into the station, her presence catching Rocky's attention. He looked over at her, his expression softening.

"Speaking of which," Rocky said with a grin, "I think someone's been caught in the same situation."

I followed his gaze to Lexi, who was now interacting with another nurse.

I laughed. "Yeah, I suppose I'm not the only one. Looks like you've got your own situation going on."

Rocky's grin widened. "Yeah, but it's not just about being caught in a situation. It's about how you handle it. It's all pretty funny, honestly."

I nodded, feeling a mix of camaraderie and amusement. The way Rocky and I were both navigating our feelings for these incredible women was both challenging and strangely comforting. We were in the same boat, trying to figure things out while maintaining our professional composure.

As Lexi turned and left the station, Rocky's gaze followed her. "You know," he said, "you've got your work cut out for you with Michaela. And I've got mine with Lexi. But hey, if we can manage the OR, we can manage this too."

I grinned, feeling a renewed sense of determination. "Agreed. Let's see where this takes us."With that, we returned to our tasks, the weight of the hospital's demands grounding us. But amidst the chaos and the pressure, there was a glimmer of hope—a sense that, despite everything, there might be something good waiting for us both.
