The Love in Between

Chapter 6

The days have gone by faster than I imagined but day by day,Jean is becoming more and more confident.As for Zane,we still fight often but we still have a good relationship.I'm not gonna confess to him that I like him,it's impossible for us to have a romantic relationship with the world we live in and sooner or later,someone will come and fetch me from the castle.As for now,we have a one-week vacation after our exam.

"Let's play the kissing game."Jack said and emptied a glass bottle.We're in my room right now for a sleepover but the boys will be sleeping with Zane next door.

"What's that?"I asked as I joined them in the circle.

"It's a game.You spin the bottle and when the bottle stopped and pointed at someone,you kiss them but if you refuse you get smacked in the forehead."Jean explained.

"Kiss?At the lips?"Humans play weird games.

"Yep.There's no exception whether it's the same gender or not."Austin said with a smirk as he massaged his hands."And of course I'm the smacker."

"Oh that's got to hurt.Ladies be careful,he has no mercy.I had a headache the whole day when I got smacked by him."Jack complained while Austin and Zane laughed.

The first spinner was Jean and the bottle pointed at Jack,we hooted when she kissed him then hid her face.Jack was next and the bottle pointed at Zane but he refused so he got smacked,they were serious,his forehead turned red!Zane was next and that made me nervous when the bottle was spinning and pointed at Austin.Of course Zane kissed him and we laughed in disgust.When it was my turn,the bottle pointed at Zane,is this fate or torture,I gulped and hesitated.Is this the end?Is my secret out already?I crawled over to him and saw him smirk.I gulped then pressed my lips on his then quickly pulled away.

"Hey was that right?It's my first time so...."I said immediately to cover my nervousness.Everyone laughed but Zane just smiled.I got teased.That was close,at least my secret is not out.

The game continued and so far,I only kissed Zane and Jean,the bottle would either point in a gap or to myself so I was lucky.After that we bid each other goodnight and went to sleep.Jean slept immediately while I couldn't so I took out a junk food then went to the veranda.The air is cool but I'm too lazy to go and grab a jacket so I just ignored the cold and ate.It's my first time doing this in the middle of the night.I can see the ocean from here.

"You'll catch a cold if you don't put on a jacket."I almost dropped the food when I heard Zane's voice.He's on his own veranda.His and mine are close so we can climb over if we want to but this is the first time that we caught each other.

"I'm too lazy to get it.Can't sleep?"I walked closer to share my food.

"The guys are snoring loudly.How about you?"He took off his jacket and laid it on me,he's wearing a sweater inside so I did not complain.

"I just can't sleep."I shrugged and looked up to gaze at the moon.

"You're name means moon.Were you born under a full moon?"

"Yeah something like that."I looked at Zane."Would it be weird to ask why you're not dating anyone?"He laughed.

"I'm looking for someone."Someone?Somehow I feel jealous for that someone.

"Oh."I just said and we were quiet for a while.

"Don't laugh but do you believe in mermaids?"My heart skipped a beat.What?

"M-maybe?Why?"I thought he's joking but he looks serious.

"When I was young,my nanny took me to the beach.We didn't know but the nanny was hired to kill me.I managed to escape with wounds all over my body but I was cornered so I jumped into the sea."

So that's what happened.

"Before I lost my consciousness in the water,I don't know if it was an illusion but I think I saw a mermaid,her back was turned so I wasn't able to see her face but I think she was also the one who saved me."My heart is beating so fast that it's deafening me,he saw me?

"Is that why you transferred here?To look for her?"I asked him uneasily.

"Yes.If that person wasn't a mermaid then she must be a local resident around here and this is the only school that's around here.I'm sure that she's around my age with that body structure.That morning when I saw you,I thought it was you."My knee feels like jelly.

"M-me?"

"Your hair.It was similar to what I saw but I was wrong.If it was you,you would have recognized this."He showed me the necklace.I laughed nervously.

"Well,when I was young,I encountered my first love when I was 6 on the beach as well."I said to change the subject.

"Oh,were you playmates?"

"No,I just watched him from a distance.Our worlds are different from each other and all I can do was watch.But that boy stopped coming and I never saw him again."I sighed."Love is a tragedy for me."

"Well maybe you haven't met the one who's meant for you yet."I smiled.

"Maybe.How about you?If you meet the person that was meant for you and that person is not the person you're looking for,would you forget about her and give up?"I waited for his answer.

"I don't know."He just said.I feel disappointed.

"It's getting colder,we should go in."I said and gave him a peck in the cheek."That's for sharing your story with me."I smiled then went in.

When I woke up,Jean was gone.She must have gone out without waking me up.Suddenly' I felt pain in my legs.I removed the blanket and looked at it then gasped.Scales are showing.This must be a side-effect,I haven't swam in a while.I need to get to the beach.I staggered to my closet and put on a random long dress over my tube and shorts then a flat sandal before hurrying out.The pain is getting worse.I dropped on the ground in front of the elevator before I can press the down button.This is bad,I can't move and I am starting to sweat. My body is getting hot.

"Luna?Are you okay?What's wrong?"Of all the people in this school,it has to be Zane.I have no choice or else I won't be able to transform back to my legs.

"Zane please,you have to take me to the beach."

"What?You look like you're sick.I'll take you to the hospital."He pressed the down button and carried me but I grabbed his shirt.

"You have to take me to the beach.I'm begging you!"

"Luna this isn't the time to have fun.I'll take you there after we get you to the hospital."Zane has his stern face on.The elevator arrived and he took me in.

"Zane,you don't understand!I need water!I need to swim!"I felt the pain spread to my knees.

"As I said,I-"

"Zane!I'm not human!I'm a mermaid!"I shouted in frustration.

"Luna this is no time to make a joke.Just because I told you that story,it doesn't mean that you'd use it to make fun of me."Great,now he's angry but I'm more angrier,I hit him by the chest.

"Hey,11 years ago!I didn't save you just so you'd ignore my request!Take me to the beach!"He almost dropped me in surprise.

I pressed my lips together when I just realized what I just said.Two secrets out in a moment.This is a disaster.
