Chapter 17

Reader's POV

Vylad and I were hanging out in his room. We were studying for an upcoming test we both had, that was until we both got distracted.

"Y/N! Look at this, there's gonna be an Annual Sports Festival next week." He exclaimed, pointing to a flyer that was given to us in our respective homerooms.

"Annual Sports Festival? Next week?" I asked, turning to Vylad and seeing the flyer. To be honest, I haven't read it.

"Yeah, apparently it's something we do here yearly." Vylad informs, searching for more information on the flyer.

"If there's gonna be volleyball, I'll totally do it."

"It says it's required to participate, unless specified otherwise."

"Really? How're they gonna enforce that?" I wondered aloud.

Vylad shrugged his shoulders and kept reading through the flyer. "It also says that we're competing with our homerooms. Meaning we won't be able to choose our own teams."

"That kinda sucks..."

"I understand they did it that way mostly so that less athletic people don't get lumped in a team together."

"I guess that makes sense." I sighed, disappointed I wouldn't be in a team with any of my close friends.

Vylad scanned the event list. "Let's see... The events list includes, soccer, volleyball, baseball, track and dodgeball."

"That's a really limited list of sports..."

"Yeah. I get that they have to make them mixed-gendered but... couldn't there have been more options?" Vylad pointed out.

I nodded, completely agreeing with him. Then something came to mind. I looked outside the window that Vylad had opened, the sun was setting over the trees. I grabbed my phone and checked the time. Shoot. It was getting late. I had to get to the park soon, it was almost sundown. I remember Gene told me to meet him there at sundown.

"Hey Vylad?"

"Yes?"

"I uh... need to start heading home. It's getting a bit late."

Vylad nodded his head in understanding. "Alright, I'm glad we got to spend time together, it's been a while since we've got to."

"For sure, I'll text you tomorrow." I waved, grabbing my journal and slipping it into my backpack.

"Bye, Y/N." Vylad waved.

I gave him once last smile as I left the room, I walked down the hall to the stairs only to be stopped when the door to Zane's room opened.

"Y/N." He narrowed his eyes at me.

"Uh. Hey Zane..." I waved with a smile, trying to hide my rush to get to the park.

"Where are you going?" He asked with his squeaky voice.

"It's getting late so I'm going home." I shrugged, with my backpack on my shoulders.

"Hmm..." Zane stared at me closely.

"Uh..." I was sweating a little from Zane being so suspicious.

"Ok. I suppose you would be going home. I almost thought you were going to sneak off to the park and meet with Gene and then become a member of the Shadow Knights."

"Uh... Yeah! There's no way I would go to the park at this hour! No way!" I brushed off Zane's suspicion with an anxious voice. I felt a bit of sweat run down my back as my ear nervously twitched.
