The days had been peaceful. Almost too peaceful.

It was strange how quickly I had fallen back into the rhythm of things with Sophia. The electric tension between us, the fire that lit up every moment we were together—it felt like nothing could touch us. The blackmail had been pushed to the back of my mind, swallowed up by the haze of her presence.

Since that night in the car, my phone had been silent. I hadn't gotten any new emails, no ominous messages, no veiled threats. I should've felt relieved, but instead, there was a gnawing sense of dread simmering beneath the surface. Maybe it was foolish, but I convinced myself that ignoring the last email had worked. That whoever was tormenting me had given up, lost interest.

Still, the thought lingered, haunting me like a shadow.

Sophia had been my escape from it all—her touch, her laugh, her body pressed against mine, chasing away every fear, every doubt. I could lose myself in her, let the outside world fade away. Even my classes had started to feel like a distraction from the time we spent together, a way to kill hours until I could be with her again.

But the calm was temporary. I knew that. Deep down, I always knew it wouldn't last.

It was the same routine: Sophia would come over, we'd lose ourselves in each other's arms, and for a few blissful hours, nothing else existed. Then she'd leave, and I'd sit alone, staring at the unopened email on my phone.

The curiosity gnawed at me. I told myself it wasn't important. I told myself it didn't matter. But I knew better. Ignoring it wouldn't make it go away.

Eventually, I couldn't take it anymore.

My hand hovered over my phone, a sick feeling twisting in my gut. I opened my inbox and there it was—the email I'd been avoiding. My finger hesitated over the message before I tapped it open, heart pounding in my chest.

The subject line was simple, just one word: Watch.

The screen flickered as the video loaded. At first, I wasn't sure what I was looking at. It was grainy, like it had been filmed from a distance, but then I saw it—Sophia, her figure unmistakable, walking across the parking lot toward my car.

My pulse quickened.

The video showed her approaching me. I could see myself waiting behind the wheel, the way my eyes lit up when she climbed into the passenger seat. It was surreal, watching the moment from the outside.

Then we were talking, though there was no sound. The camera zoomed in slightly, capturing the way I reached for her, the way she leaned in. My throat tightened.

We were kissing now, and I could see the hunger, the need in both of us. I watched as she straddled me, her legs on either side of mine, and the car began to shake, the windows fogging up. The scene played out in front of me, and my stomach dropped. It was all there—every touch, every kiss, every moment of passion laid bare for someone else's eyes.

A cold sweat broke out across my skin. My hands trembled as I gripped the phone tighter, my heart racing in my chest.

The video cut off abruptly, leaving me staring at the screen. For a few seconds, I couldn't move, couldn't think. Then my phone dinged again, and my breath hitched.

Another email.

"Do I finally have your attention?"

The knot in my stomach tightened as I opened the message.

"It's simple. I want money."

My vision blurred as I reread the words, my mind scrambling to process the demand. Money. Of course. It was always about money in the end. I should've expected it, but the relief I thought I'd feel didn't come. Instead, a cold panic gripped me.

The email continued:

"Twenty-five thousand. In cash. And don't even think about running to the police. I know everything. I have everything. You have three days."

My breath came in shallow bursts as I stared at the screen. Twenty-five thousand? There was no way I could pull together that kind of money on such short notice. Hell, even if I had the time, I didn't have those kinds of resources.

My mind raced. What the hell was I going to do?

I leaned back in my chair, pressing the heels of my hands to my eyes, trying to push away the panic. The images from the video burned into my brain, playing on repeat. How had they even gotten the footage? Who the hell was watching us?

And more importantly, why the hell hadn't I been more careful?

Sophia's face flashed in my mind, her smile, the way she looked at me, the way she trusted me. How the hell was I going to tell her about this?

I'd dragged her into this mess. She didn't deserve this. But now there was no way out, not without paying the price.

The phone sat heavy in my hand, the ominous threat hanging over me like a dark cloud. I swallowed hard, forcing down the rising panic.

I had three days. Three days to figure something out before everything came crashing down.

And as much as I wanted to reach out to Sophia for comfort, I knew I couldn't. Not this time. Not with everything on the line.

This was my mess.

Now, I had to figure out how to clean it up.
