The end of the semester arrived with a strange sense of relief. The bustling energy of the campus slowly faded as students packed up their lives, eager to leave behind the weight of assignments, exams, and deadlines. The hallways became quieter, the classrooms emptier, and for the first time in weeks, I felt like I could finally breathe. As the pressure of my role as a professor began to lift, I found myself thinking more and more about Sophia—about us. The tension of the past weeks, the stolen moments, the secret touches—all of it had consumed me. But now, without the ever-looming threat of being discovered on campus, I felt... emboldened.
Maybe it was the sense of finality that came with the end of the semester, or perhaps it was the realization that I wanted more than just a string of hidden encounters. I didn't want our relationship to live only in the shadows. I wanted to take her out in the open, to see what this could become without the fear of being caught.
I wanted to try.
So, with the break before the next term offering some much-needed freedom, I decided to make a move I hadn't before. I called Sophia and asked if she would join me for a day out—something beyond the secretive rendezvous we had fallen into. A date, I suppose, though that word still felt foreign in my mouth when it came to us.
"Are you sure?" she had asked on the phone, her voice light but teasing. "A coffee shop? No dark corners? No hiding?"
I chuckled, more at myself than her. "No hiding," I said. "I want to take you out. Properly."
She agreed, and the next morning, I found myself sitting at a small café near the center of town, the aroma of fresh coffee mingling with the scent of crisp winter air. The café was cozy and intimate, with soft lighting and large windows overlooking a small park. It felt like the right setting—a chance for us to start something real.
When Sophia arrived, dressed in a simple sweater and distressed blue jeans, her hair pulled back loosely, she looked different from how she usually appeared in class—more relaxed, more at ease, less tempting —more real. She smiled when she saw me, and for a moment, everything else fell away.
"Hi," she said softly, sliding into the seat across from me.
"Hi," I replied, unable to stop the smile that crept onto my face. "You look... beautiful."
She blushed, a light pink dusting her cheeks as she looked down at the table. "Thank you. You don't look so bad yourself, Professor DeLuca." She wasn't the only one dressed differently than normal, my dark maroon Henley and straight leg jeans were not my normal work attire.
The teasing note in her voice made my heart race, but this time it wasn't out of fear. It was anticipation—excitement.
We ordered coffee, and for the first time, we talked openly, without the weight of secrecy hanging over us. She told me about her plans for the summer, about her excitement for the classes she was going to take next semester. I told her about my upcoming lectures and the new material I was working on.
It felt easy. Normal.
We stayed at the café for hours, lost in conversation, the world outside the window fading as we created our own little universe at that small table. Every so often, our hands would brush, a soft reminder that this was different, a small reminder of the electric currents that flowed through our bodies during our moments alone. This wasn't just an affair anymore. It was something more. I could feel it, and I think she could too.
After we finished our coffee, I suggested we take a walk in the park across the street. The trees were bare, but the park still held a kind of quiet beauty, the paths winding through open spaces and small gardens. As we walked, I pulled out a small book of poetry from my coat—a gesture I had planned, though it felt spontaneous when I handed it to her.
