Reach for the Stars
Alright, so I had got a compelling rebuttal to my claim in the last chapter, that no person is born evil.
And this was a proper rebuttal, done politely and properly. So thank you.
They pointed out that some people despite growing up in good homes turned into Murders. As well as the fact that some people are born with mental disorders that don't allow them to feel empathy.
Of course, I am shortening it down quite a bit, but this is the gist of the counterargument.
My rebuttal.
Firstly, yes, people who grow up in a good home, can still become horrible people. However, that goes back to my argument about people gravitating towards evil, and good parenting.
Because good parenting also involves steering your children in the right direction. If you don't make an effort to instill morals into your children, you can give them all the love and care in the world, and they might still grow up to be terrible people.
For some children, that is going to be harder than others. And for some children, you're going to need to be more heavy-handed, and dole out harsher punishments. Some parents fail to do that, and as such, we get people growing up well-loved and cared for, they end up as bad people.
As for people with mental disorders that keep them from feeling empathy and other such things.
Well, that's complicated for me to get into, because I am not a professional in the field of mental health, and as such, I can't speak on details about how those things work because I would be speaking out my ass.
However, what I do know, is that there are many, many people who have these mental illnesses, and live perfectly normal lives. I've heard stories of people who have friends and love ones who have these mental illnesses, but you wouldn't know it unless they told you.
It is completely possible that even despite having a mental illness that makes you lack empathy, you can be a better person than someone without that mental illness.
My way of viewing this is as such. There are an unfathomable amount of decisions that can be made during a person's life, both by them and the people around them, that can change them for better or worse. And I don't believe there is a single person that will always end up rotten regardless of which one of those paths they walk.
It's all about guiding them down the right path. And unfortunately, that can be, stupidly difficult.
Even if a set of parents wants to do everything in their power to raise their child right and make them into a good person, they can get screwed over by either outside elements, or their own lack of knowledge. Because unfortunately being a good person, does not equate to being a good parent.
As I said earlier, if your child is leaning towards a dark path, and you don't have either the will to force them off that path, or the knowledge needed to pull them off it, or both, then that child will grow into a bad person.
I say that anyone can be a good person if they're guided down the correct path in life, but that is easier said than done, as that path is not labeled, nor clear.
And so that's my stance. I believe anyone can become a good person, regardless of their nature, but that can be very, very difficult due to circumstances.
Anyway, enough with that, onto the fic.
It's been an...strange week for Eri.
First was the interview that revealed her back story to the world.
