Chapter 15 - You Know Who

I've been at Hogwarts for a month. It is weird to be able to say that. I feel like my life has changed so fast and so quickly. After my schedule was changed, I was worried I would struggle in the third year's class, but I have been excelling. Even though I'm in class with kids two years older than me, I'm the best in my class. Since the class had already started, I was forced to a table in the back by myself. When I walked in the first day, I don't think I could have rolled my eyes harder when I saw the twins already messing with each other from across that aisle before the class even started. They already had to be separated from each other and now they are on both ends reaching over their table partner. When Fred saw me sitting by myself, is eye got big and he jumped up to ty and walk over to me. Snape came up behind him and smacked him on the back of the head with a wadded up piece of paper making him sit back onto his chair.

"Mr. Weasley, Miss Noir has high promise for this class. Please leave her in peace," Snape scolds.

Though I'm still not as close with Ron, Harry, and Hermione as the three of them are, I still feel like, for the first time, I have friends. Multiple times a week we will fill some paper bags with food from the Great Hall than sneak out to the court yard so that we can all sit and eat together. Tonight is a Friday, and we have all agreed to eat together.

While we are sitting and eating outside, a couple of older students in emerald cloaks pass by, calling Harry "The One Who Lived". Their voice sounds derogatory, but I don't understand why they were calling him that or why it would be considered a bad thing like they are making it sound. When I glance back at Harry, he's looking back down at where he pulled out his food and laid it on the bag. He wipes at his nose and then announces that he is going to the bathroom.

After he leaves, I look to Ron for an explanation, "What are they talking about?"

"Have you heard of a guy called "You Know Who?" Ron asks me.

I shake my head, which causes him to sigh and scrunch up his nose as he thinks about his next words. "All I can tell is you is what Mum has told me. There was a bad guy that arose a few years before we were born. They say that if you say his real name, he will come for you. He didn't like people that weren't considered purebloods." Ron swallows as though he is guilty of this man's actions. I look over at Hermione, knowing that she has muggle parents and she shifts uncomfortably at the subject.

"He wanted to do bad to those who weren't pure bloods," he pauses and his pause makes me wonder if I would have been one of these people if I was alive. "Harry's story is one that kids that are born into the wizarding world earlier hear often. He came for Harry one night. He used the killing spell on him, but he lived. He is the only person known to have survived it," he finishes.

We sit in silence for a while when we all agree that Harry isn't coming back. We clean up in silence, and we all give solemn-sounding goodbyes as we head off to our common rooms.

Saturdays at Hogwarts are weird. First, the only time that I actually had a weekend was when I was sent to a foster home, so I haven't experienced more than a handful. Second, there isn't much to do on the first actual Saturdays I get. I do hang out with Harry, Ron, and Hermione for a few hours when I see them but they spend most of the day in their common room. I skip towards Minny's office.

Her door is cracked, so I go in without knocking. I make flouring arm movements as I skip to a chair in front of her desk and make a big show of sitting down and plopping my feet up on the arm of the other chair.

"Hello, Miss Noir," Minny greets while desperately trying to hide her smile.

"Hello, Minny," I respond.

"Is there something I can do for you, Miss Nior? Maybe help you with your Transfiguration Essay?"

"Nope, but I do have some other questions for you," I tell her cheekily.

She sighs and motions for me to go on. I get straight to it, deciding to start off with the easiest question first, "Who is this," I pause and then finish in a stereotypical scary voice, "He Who Must Not Be Named," I switch back to my normal voice, "Guy."

"The He Who Must Not Be Named guy's name is Voldemort. First of all, people fear his name because whenever he was alive, saying his name could alert him of you. He had some awful beliefs, and even worse, he acted on them. People that he did not agree with were anyone that wasn't a pureblood. He wanted them killed. He caused many innocent people to die, and though it may sound like some ancient history, right now, every single person around you has been affected by it, whether it was family they lost, the shame of a family member, or people that still haven't healed from what it takes out of you to do the right thing," when she says that everyone around me is affected by it, it. It makes me wonder if that includes me in some way. Beyond that, I'm sure you have heard your classmates talking about Harry, and at the end of the day, it is story to tell as much or as least as he wants," she finishes with a stoic expression.

"Minny, am I a pureblood?" I ask.

"No, Miss Nior, you are not. You can't be part veela while being a pureblood."

"Oh," I respond. That makes sense.

"Minny, do you know who my parent are?"

My question causes her to still, "I'm sorry Miss Noir, but even if I did, I wouldn't be able to tell you," she responds, and she does genuinely sound sorry.

I feel tears prick at my eyes, as not only was the main question that I have been asking my whole life isn't answered again when I thought I would finally find an answer, but the person I have had time to grow trust with starts to fracture a bit.

I plaster on a smile as I swing my legs back onto the floor, "Ok, thanks Minny!" I yell back as I quickly rush out of the room.

I start running down the hallway. I slow my pace as I see Ron, Harry, and Hermione all in the courtyard. I come to a complete stop as I watch them all talking, and Ron and Harry are playing chess. The tears I kept back in Minny's office slowly slide down my face. They told me that they were all going to be completely busy with schoolwork till late tonight. I wipe my tears and slowly start walking towards my common room again.

"Hey! Syria!" one of the Weasley twins yells from behind me.

"Do you think you could help us break into the Ravenclaw commonro-," the other twin, Fred, cuts his words off as he sees my upset face. "Noir, are you ok?"

"Yeah, why? What do you need?" I respond in an annoyed voice.

"We don't need anything," Fred rushes out just as George goes to open his mouth. "We were wondering if you wanted some chocolate frogs?" he asks in a sympathetic voice.

His sympathy only makes me more annoyed, "Why? So that you can prank me again?" I snap.

His face falls, and I feel bad for bringing out my attitude toward him, but I remember how badly he embarrassed me. I turn around and walk away.
