The day of the coronation came quickly and Alicent was taken to the Sept beforehand to ensure everything was perfect. The entire room had been decorated with the Targaryen sigil and areas had been marked off to show where everyone would stand. It was very segregated with peasants at the back and nobles at the front.
It was all very overwhelming and she was not even the one getting crowned, she could only imagine how Rhaenyra felt. She had not been able to see the girl that morning due to how busy she was, they had spoken last night but Rhaenyra had not been very talkative.
The area around the altar had been blocked off so no one, other than family and priests, could reach it. This was where Rhaenyra would be crowned for the entire nation to see.
Alicent was set to stand with Edya, Laenor, and Laena near the altar. Her father had been invited but said he could not come due to 'illness'. She was glad he was not coming, she did not think she could deal with another bit of stress.
Alicent had Visenya on her hip and as the room got more busy she began to cry. "Shh.. shh.. it is okay.." she whispered, trying to soothe the toddler. "Dada will be here soon.. come on.."
As the room started filling up the High Septon came over to her. "Your Grace." He greeted, bowing his head.
Alicent smiled and curtsied. "Father, how nice it is to see you again."
"Yes, you have not been visiting the Sept recently. I take it that your new life is keeping you busy." He turned to Visenya, who was still loudly crying. "Hello, little one.. Do you not know that it is bad manners to be loud in a house of worship?"
Visenya calmed down a bit and watched the man curiously, she babbled something inaudible. "She will be talking soon." The High Septon. "Well, I must go prepare. Good day to you, Alicent."
Once he was gone she looked down at Visenya. "You listen to him and not me?"
They did not have to wait long until the sound of trumpets filled the room, indicating Rhaenyra's entrance.
Guards came out and cleared a pathway through the sept. "Prince Rhaegar Targaryen!" one yelled, moving to reveal Rhaenyra at the entrance.
She was dressed in a black and red suit with a silver chest plate that proudly adorned the Targaryen sigil. Her silver hair and violet eyes stood out against the darkness of her outfit, almost as if she was glowing.
As she walked across the room guards lowered their swords behind her. Alicent could see how nervous she looked, her eyes dotted around the room until they finally landed on her. 'I love you' Alicet mouthed.
Rhaenyra smiled at her and seemed to calm down a bit. 'Love you too' she mouthed back.
When she reached the alter the High Septon began speaking. "We gather today to crown Rhaegar Targaryen.. the protector of the realm, the one true ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, chosen by the Gods and marked by destiny."
Rhaenyra knelt down and the Septon approached her with a bowl of oil. He put his thumb in the oil before dabbing it on her forehead. "By the will of the Gods, I anoint you, the servant of the realm. May the Father grant you wisdom, the Mother grant you mercy, the Warrior grant you courage, and the Stranger grant you the strength to face the unknown."
Rhaenyra closed her eyes and took a deep breath as the Septon stepped back. "Bring forth the crown, the symbol of the King's rule."
Ser Harrold Westerling came out, holding Jaehaerys's crown on a velvet pillow. He brought it to the Septon who took it and held it above Rhaenyra's head. "Do you swear, before the Gods and men, to protect this realm and its people? To defend the weak, to honour the old ways, and to uphold the laws of the Seven Kingdoms?"
