Evara's eyes fluttered open, greeting the soft morning light that filtered through her window. She lay still, letting the reality of her 23rd birthday sink in. Another year older, another year wiser – or so she hoped.

She tossed off the covers and swung her legs over the side of the bed, her feet dangling in the air. The familiar routine of college life awaited her, a comforting distraction from the turmoil that had become her personal life.

Evara stood up, stretching her arms overhead, and began her morning ritual. She shuffled to the bathroom, the cool tile floor a shock to her bare feet. As she brushed her teeth, she gazed at her reflection in the mirror.

Her dark hair cascaded down her back like a waterfall, framing her oval face. Her brown eyes, once bright and full of life, now seemed dull and tired. The weight of her family's expectations, the pressure to conform, had taken its toll.

She dressed quickly, choosing a simple white shirt and jeans. Her birthday, once a celebration of life and possibility, now felt like just another day.

As she grabbed her backpack and headed out the door, Evara's mother called out from the kitchen.

"Happy birthday, beta! Come home early, we're celebrating tonight."

Evara forced a smile, her heart heavy with the thought of the evening ahead.

"I will, Mom. Love you."

The door closed behind her, and Evara stepped into the crisp morning air, unsure of what the day – or her future – held.
