Dinner passed in a blur, Evara's mind reeling from the sudden engagement.
Mom dominated the conversation, discussing marriage plans and dates.
Evara nodded, numb, as Marven occasionally interjected.
As dinner concluded, Marven pushed his chair back.
"I should go," he said, standing.
Evara rose, mechanically.
"Goodnight," she whispered.
Marven's lips brushed against her cheek.
"Goodnight, my fiancée," he whispered.
A gentle hug followed, sending shivers down Evara's spine.
Mom beamed.
"Goodnight, Marven. Thank you for coming."
"Thank you, aunt," Marven replied, smiling.
As Marven left, Evara felt trapped.
"Mom, can we talk?" Evara asked, desperation creeping in.
"Not now, beta. Tomorrow. You're tired," Mom replied, patting her hand.
Evara's frustration simmered.
But Mom had already turned away.
"Get some rest, Evara. Big plans tomorrow."
Evara trudged upstairs, her engagement ring weighing heavily.
In her room, she collapsed onto the bed.
Tears streamed down her face.
Why had Mom done this?
Why had she agreed?
The questions swirled, but answers eluded her.
