"Cut the cake, Evara!" Mom exclaimed, her eyes sparkling.
Evara hesitantly picked up the knife, blowing out the candles. As she cut the cake, Marven stood behind her, his presence unsettling.
She turned to feed her mom a bite, but as she turned back to feed her dad, her world crashed.
Marven knelt down, a small box open, revealing a glittering ring.
"Evara, will you be my wife?" he asked, his eyes locked on hers.
Evara's mind froze.
No words came.
Tears streamed down her face.
She met her mom's gaze, pleading for help.
But Mom's expression was resolute.
"Yes, of course, her answer will be yes," Mom said, her voice firm.
Evara felt a pressure on her shoulder, Mom's grip tightening.
"Say yes, Evara," Mom whispered, her eyes commanding.
Evara's voice cracked.
"Y-yes."
The word escaped, a betrayal to her own desires.
Marven's face lit up.
"Why are you crying, Evara? Are you okay?" he asked, concern etched on his face.
Mom intervened.
"Marven, she's totally okay. She's crying because of happiness. You proposed to her, that's why."
Evara felt numb.
Trapped.
A prisoner in her own life.
Marven's smile faltered.
"Evara, do you really want to marry me?"
Evara's gaze fell.
She couldn't speak.
Couldn't breathe.
Her heart screamed "no."
But her voice remained silenced.
