It was no more than a mile before inner Asher began to thrash around for a whole different reason,
Remembrance.
Thoughts she had buried deep, thoughts she had forced into a restless sleep, were suddenly wide awake. And they weren't stirring gently. They were clawing their way back-fast.
This wasn't good...she was panicking again all too soon.
She needed to get back to the confines of her bedroom before it got worse!
Her steps hastened. Her head spun.
"I can't. I can't. I can't," she muttered under her breath, over and over like a mantra.
She growled low in frustration. "Asher, stay with me," she whimpered to herself.
The junction was still too far away.
She had to get home.
Had to get to bed.
Had to disappear into the sheets and let the world fade away.
Her hands trembled violently, her teeth clattering-not from the cold, but from the exhaustion crawling up her spine.
Her vision was slipping. She couldn't hold onto it much longer.
Then-
Raindrops.
Cold, sharp, cutting against her skin.
She cursed at the sky, an angry, frustrated sound torn from her throat.
She was just tired.
So damn tired.
Her legs felt heavier with every step.
The bitter aftertaste of coffee now mixed with the salt of her tears and the bile in her throat.
She couldn't stop them.
Tears kept falling.
For the life of her, she couldn't keep her mouth closed.
Her breathing-constricted. Always had been.
When panic hit, this was the only way forward.
"Asher!"
The sudden call of her name sent a violent jolt through her body.
She whipped around.
Harry.
Following her.
No.
"Stop following me!" she yelled, panic tightening her chest.
She turned.
Started running.
"Yellow! Please stop, we can-"
"NO! We can't!"
She didn't need to hear the rest.
She already knew.
She was at her limit. She was breaking. And the last thing she wanted was to talk.
Even if she hated herself.
Her legs carried her as fast as they could, but her lungs fought against her.
She battled the worst kind of asthma, and running only made her look more helpless-like a frightened child, waddling away.
