Chapter 18: Despair and New Hope
The days after his father's surgery passed slowly, but they were filled with tension. Kaya kept trying to maintain his family's spirits, even though the burden on his shoulders felt increasingly heavy. His father was still in recovery, and although his condition was gradually improving, Kaya knew that the road to full recovery was still long. Kaya's mother also struggled to keep her small shop running, but without financial help from Kaya, they were facing difficulties.
Kaya spent most of his time caring for his father at home, while in between, he tried to find ways to get back on his feet. However, every effort he made seemed futile. His money was gone, and whenever he tried to find new vintage items to sell, the results were always disappointing. "Is this the end of everything I've worked for?" Kaya thought in despair.
In the midst of this situation, his mother's shop was also facing trouble. A new competitor in the neighborhood opened a bigger shop, offering lower prices and more food variety. The loyal customers who used to frequent his mother's shop began to switch, and their income dwindled. Kaya saw how his mother tried to smile in front of him, though it was clear that she, too, was feeling the same despair.
One afternoon, as Kaya was tidying up his mother's shop, a group of thugs suddenly barged in. They forced their way into the shop and began wrecking everything. "You shouldn't be selling here," one of them said in a threatening tone. "This place belongs to someone else." Kaya tried to fight back, but he wasn't strong enough to face them. In just minutes, the shop that his mother had built with so much effort was in ruins. Kaya's mother cried as she saw her hard work destroyed so easily, and Kaya's heart shattered even more.
"Why is this happening?" Kaya whispered in despair after the thugs left. He felt like he had failed to protect his family, and for the first time, he truly doubted his ability to change their fate. Kaya sat on the floor of the wrecked shop, staring blankly at the chaos around him. "Is all of this effort meaningless?" he thought, as tears began to well up in his eyes.
That night, as they returned home, the atmosphere was heavy and silent. His mother tried to comfort Kaya, though it was clear that she, too, was feeling hopeless. "We'll get through this, Kaya," his mother said with a trembling voice. "We've gotten through tough times before, and we'll do it again this time." But those words weren't enough to ease the despair that clung to Kaya's heart.
The next day, even though his spirit had been worn down, Kaya kept trying to find ways to solve the problems they were facing. He started browsing the internet, looking for new opportunities to earn some income. However, everything he found seemed unrealistic or required capital he didn't have. Anxiety and fear weighed down his mind even more, making him feel more and more defeated.
In the midst of his despair, Kaya received a message from RetroWave. "Kaya, I haven't heard from you in a while. What's going on?" RetroWave asked in the message. Kaya hesitated to share all of his troubles, but he knew he couldn't keep everything bottled up inside. With a sense of shame, Kaya told RetroWave everything-his father's accident, the loss of his savings, the destruction of his mother's shop, and the despair that now surrounded him.
RetroWave's response came quicker than Kaya expected. "Kaya, I can feel how hard things are for you right now," RetroWave wrote. "But remember, failure isn't the end of everything. Sometimes, we need to fall to find a better way to rise again." RetroWave then offered a helping hand that Kaya hadn't expected. "I have a small project I'm working on," RetroWave continued. "Maybe you could help me. It's not a big project, but it could be a start to regain your confidence and earn a little income."
Kaya accepted RetroWave's offer with a sense of relief and new hope. Though it wasn't an immediate solution to all his problems, he felt that this was the first step that could lead him out of despair. He knew he had to start with something, and although small, this project could be the beginning of the big change he needed.
That night, Kaya sat in front of his laptop, working diligently on the project given by RetroWave. He designed levels with full dedication, combining creativity and knowledge he had learned over time. Whenever he felt doubt or despair, he remembered RetroWave's words, that failure wasn't the end of everything. "I can do this," he thought. "I have to do this, for myself and for my family."
Over the next few weeks, Kaya immersed himself in the work. Though the project wasn't big, he gave his best, striving to make every detail as perfect as possible. RetroWave gave positive feedback, which further motivated Kaya to keep moving forward. "You're doing an amazing job, Kaya," RetroWave wrote in one of the messages. "I know this isn't easy, but you're showing that you have incredible talent. Don't stop here."
In the middle of working on this project, Kaya began to feel his spirit return. He realized that, although the journey was filled with obstacles, he had the ability to rise again. Every day, he learned something new, both about game development and about himself. He discovered that, although his money was gone, his knowledge, creativity, and perseverance were far more valuable assets.
This small project also began to yield results. Though the income wasn't large, Kaya managed to earn $130 from his work with RetroWave. This amount might not be enough to solve all his family's financial problems, but it was enough to give them hope that things could get better. "This is just the beginning," Kaya thought. "I'll keep working hard, and I know that with every small step, I'll get closer to my goal."
One night, as they sat together in the living room, his mother looked at Kaya with a gaze full of gratitude. "Kaya, I don't know what we would do if you weren't here," his mother said. "You've sacrificed so much, and now you're bringing hope back to this house." Kaya just smiled and took his mother's hand. "We'll get through this together, Mom," he replied gently. "I won't give up, and I know we'll come out of this hardship stronger than ever."
With newfound determination, Kaya continued his work, more convinced that his future would be bright. He knew there were still many challenges ahead, but he also knew that he wouldn't face them alone. With the support of his family, RetroWave, and the perseverance he possessed, Kaya felt ready to take on whatever was coming.
That night, after finishing another level for RetroWave's project, Kaya paused for a moment. "This isn't the end," he thought. "This is just the beginning." With renewed resolve, he closed his laptop and lay down on his bed, ready to face tomorrow with the courage he had rediscovered.
