Chapter 10: Opening a Bank Account and Helping the Family

That morning, Kaya woke up with mixed emotions. The money from selling the antique vase was still safely stored in a small box under his bed. It was a significant amount for Kaya, and he knew that keeping such a large sum of money at home wasn’t a wise decision. He needed to do something better with it. So, he decided to open a bank account and deposit most of the money there.

Kaya went to the local bank with his mother. At 15 years old, he couldn’t open an account in his own name without parental consent. When they arrived at the bank, they were greeted by a friendly officer who explained the process of opening an account. Kaya listened carefully, understanding every step that was explained. He felt a little nervous but also excited because this was a big step in his life.

After all the paperwork was prepared and his mother provided her signature, Kaya finally had his own bank account. He felt proud and a little relieved. Now, his money was safe, and he could start planning how to use it more wisely. The bank officer even gave him an debit card and explained how to use it. Kaya carefully put the card away, feeling like he had taken his first step toward independence.

On the way home, Kaya talked with his mother. He knew how heavy the financial burden had been on their family, especially the cost of his schooling. With a firm tone, he told his mother that they no longer needed to worry about paying for his education. “Mom, I have my own money now. I want you to use this for more important things,” Kaya said with conviction.

His mother was surprised but also proud of Kaya’s maturity. They stopped for a moment by the side of the road, in front of a small stall selling local snacks. “Mom, how about we start our own stall? You’re great at making cakes and fried snacks. We can start small, and maybe it will grow over time,”** Kaya continued with enthusiasm.

His mother’s eyes filled with tears. She hadn’t expected her young son to think so far ahead. “You’ve truly grown up, my dear,” she said, her voice trembling. “I never imagined we could reach this point, especially with your help. I’m so proud of you.”

They started planning the stall together. Kaya and his mother calculated the costs of buying kitchen equipment, raw materials, and the initial stock they would need. After everything was added up, Kaya estimated that they would need around $800 to start the stall. He set aside the money, and together with his mother, they began shopping for the necessary supplies.

The first few days after the stall opened were full of challenges, but they also brought much joy to Kaya’s family. His mother started selling small cakes, fried snacks, and traditional street food in front of their home. They worked hard every day, and every time a customer came by, Kaya felt a deep sense of satisfaction. “At least now Mom doesn’t have to worry about grocery money anymore,” he thought.

Even though their financial situation began to improve, Kaya never forgot to be frugal. He constantly thought about the future, remembering the hard times they had been through. “This money isn’t to be spent carelessly,” he reminded himself. “I need to make the most of it so we don’t go back to those difficult times.” He chose to buy raw materials at a wholesale market for cheaper prices, even though it meant waking up earlier to get the best deals.

Neighbors began noticing the changes in Kaya’s family. They saw the small snack stall now standing in front of Kaya’s house and how the family seemed to breathe a little easier. Some were impressed by Kaya’s hard work and determination, especially given his young age. However, not all were happy. A few felt envious, questioning how a teenage boy could have such a large amount of money.

Kaya stayed focused on his goals. He didn’t care much about what others thought, knowing that his life was still far from perfect. He knew that the journey ahead was long and full of challenges. With a mature and calculated mindset, Kaya carefully managed the remaining money in his bank account, only using it for truly necessary things.

That night, after all the work was done, Kaya sat in his simple room. He looked at the new schoolbooks he had finally been able to buy, thanks to his own efforts. “I need to keep saving,” he thought. “This money can disappear in an instant if I’m not careful.” He knew that this was only the beginning of a long journey, and he was determined not to waste the opportunity he had created for himself.
