Chapter 22: The Defining Auction

The auction day finally arrived. Kaya felt nervous yet excited. He knew this was a crucial moment, a moment that could change his and his family's future. Since morning, a mix of anticipation and tension filled his mind. "I've come this far," he thought, "now I just have to see if all my efforts will bear fruit."

Mr. Anton picked Kaya up from his house to head to the prestigious auction house in the city. On the way, they discussed plans to ensure that the wooden statue would get the attention it deserved from collectors. "We've done everything we could," Mr. Anton said calmly. "Now it's just a matter of seeing how the market responds."

The auction house was located in a historic building, grand with classical architecture that added an exclusive atmosphere. Kaya felt small as he entered the building, seeing people who appeared seasoned and experienced in the world of antiques. However, he also felt a new sense of excitement-the desire to become part of this world.

When they arrived in the auction room, the wooden statue, carefully verified and appraised by Mr. Anton and other experts, was already displayed prominently on a small stage. Spotlights highlighting the statue added a dramatic touch, emphasizing the importance of the item. The auction room was filled with experienced collectors, each sitting quietly but alert, waiting for the right moment to raise their hands.

"The auction will begin in fifteen minutes," a staff member informed them. Kaya took a seat at the back, while Mr. Anton chose to sit near the front with the other collectors. Kaya's hands were sweating, and his heart was racing. "Will anyone bid?" he thought hopefully. "Will this work?"

A few minutes later, an experienced auctioneer stood on stage. He was a middle-aged man with a clear and authoritative voice, dressed sharply in a suit that added to his professional demeanor. The auctioneer began by introducing the statue, explaining its history in captivating detail. "This statue," he said, "comes from the late Qing Dynasty, an era where wood carving reached its peak of craftsmanship. This statue represents a guardian warrior, a symbol of strength and protection that was highly revered during that time."

The auctioneer's words created a tense anticipation in the room. Some collectors began whispering, studying the statue more closely. Kaya could see how their attention increasingly focused on the piece, and he hoped this would translate into competitive bidding.

"We'll start at $3,250," said the auctioneer, opening the bidding. The atmosphere in the room instantly grew tense. For a few seconds that felt like an eternity to Kaya, no one raised their hand. But then, a man in the front row lifted his hand, followed by the auctioneer calling out the first bid.

"$3,250," the auctioneer said firmly. "Do I hear a higher bid?"

Another hand went up, raising the bid to $3,575. Kaya held his breath as the bidding continued. "$3,900... $4,225... $4,550..." With each increase, Kaya's heart beat faster. "It's working," he thought hopefully.

The auction process moved quickly and was filled with tension. Each time the auctioneer announced a new bid, hands would go up, creating an intense dynamic in the room. The bids kept rising, with several collectors competing to claim the statue. When the price reached $6,500, the room became even more intense. Kaya could hardly believe what was happening in front of him. "Is this really happening?" he thought.

The bidding slowed down slightly around $7,800, but then, a collector from the far end of the room raised the bid to $8,125. Mr. Anton, sitting near the stage, turned to Kaya and gave him a triumphant smile. "We're almost at the peak," Kaya thought, feeling a little more at ease but still anxious.

The auctioneer continued to wait, giving anyone interested the chance to place another bid. The tension continued to rise, and Kaya felt time slowing down. "Who will bid next?" he wondered anxiously. "Is this the end?"

Finally, after a few more rounds of bidding, the auctioneer struck the gavel decisively. "Sold for $9,750," he said in a clear voice. Kaya felt as if time stood still for a moment. He stared ahead, trying to comprehend what had just happened. The statue had sold for far more than he had ever imagined.

Mr. Anton approached Kaya, congratulating him with a broad smile on his face. "You've done it, Kaya," he said, shaking Kaya's hand enthusiastically. "This is just the beginning of your journey."

Kaya nodded, still feeling as if he were dreaming. "Thank you, Mr. Anton," he replied. "I couldn't have done this without your help."

After all the formalities were completed, Kaya received his share of the sale, totaling $9,100 after deducting fees and the auction house's commission. The amount he received felt like a dream come true.

That night, after returning home, Kaya reflected on what had happened. He looked at his bank account, seeing a number he had never imagined before. But he also knew that with this money came great responsibility. "Now is not the time to relax," Kaya thought. "I have to plan my next steps carefully."

Before going to bed, Kaya spoke with his mother about the day's events. His mother listened intently, smiling proudly as Kaya recounted how the auction had gone. "You've worked hard, Kaya," she said, hugging him. "And now you're seeing the results of all your effort."

Kaya nodded, feeling both relieved and determined. "This is just the beginning, Mom," he said softly. "I still have a lot I want to achieve."

That night, Kaya slept with a sense of satisfaction but also with the awareness that his long journey had just begun. He had already made plans for the next day, and he was ready to face the next challenge with renewed energy.
