Detective Patel's words hung in the air, weighing heavily on Rory's shoulders.
"I'll testify," Rory said, squaring her shoulders.
Elijah's expression turned grim. "We'll need to prepare you."
Patel nodded. "I'll arrange protection for you and your family."
Rory's mind reeled. "Jai's lawyers will stop at nothing."
"We'll be ready," Elijah said, his voice reassuring.
The three of them huddled around the kitchen table, strategizing.
As the night wore on, Rory's exhaustion caught up with her.
"I need to rest," Rory said, pushing back her chair.
Elijah nodded. "Get some sleep. We'll continue in the morning."
Rory retreated to the bedroom, her thoughts racing.
She couldn't shake the feeling that Jai was closing in.
Just as she drifted off to sleep, Rory's phone buzzed.
An unknown number flashed on the screen.
"Rory, you're making a grave mistake," Jai's voice whispered.
Rory's heart skipped a beat.
"Leave me alone, Jai."
"You'll pay for betraying me."
The line went dead.
Rory's hands trembled as she handed the phone to Elijah.
"He's escalating," Elijah said, his face set in determination.
Detective Patel arrived early the next morning, armed with documents.
"Jai's financial records show a pattern of money laundering," Patel explained.
Elijah's eyes narrowed. "We can tie him to the shell companies."
Rory's resolve strengthened. "Let's do this."
Together, they pored over evidence, building a solid case.
But as they worked, Rory sensed Jai's presence lurking in the shadows.
