The noises of the jet rang around my ears, the engine oddly loud. Flicking a few switches on the board, I looked out of the cockpit window down at the endless expanse of blue and sighed worriedly. The engine had been acting up since I set off from the coast of Portugal a few hours ago. The flight across the Atlantic was a long one, and technically I wasn't supposed to fly over said expanse of water. However, the route hadn't been my decision. In our haste to leave the hotel room in coastal Portugal, my mission partner - Bucky - had ordered me to fly straight over the Atlantic.

Suddenly, the jet dipped, accompanied by a loud, harsh, whirring sound. The sound of footsteps alerted me to Bucky's presence behind me.

"What the hell is going on?" he demanded, and when I took a quick glance behind me, I saw his eyebrows furrowed with frustration.

"I don't know!" I exclaimed, as suddenly an alarm began to blare. "Fuck!"

"Y/n! What's happening?!"

The jet dipped and shuddered. With the alarm blaring in my ears and the red lights flashing up at me, the truth hadn't quite hit me as the jet's nose tilted downwards.

"Y/n!" Bucky yelled over the noise.

Adrenaline surging, I flicked switches, deploying as many emergency measures as possible. Heart racing, my hand gripped tightly on the stick, and I could feel my palms becoming sweaty. Then, it hit me. The jet shuddered again and dipped violently, rocking me. I heard things clatter in the main part of the jet.

"Buckle up!" I yelled to Bucky. "We're going down!"

"Y/n, let me hel-"

"Sit your ass down!" I yelled, eyes glued in front of me.

"Land!" Bucky yelled back, pointing to a small island that was just coming into view over the horizon.

"It's too far!" I pointed out, panic rising inside me. "We're going down into the ocean!"

I reached across towards the SOS button and hit it.

"Y/n, why not try?" Bucky asked. "If we're going down, try get us on the island, or just in the shallows!"

I sighed.

"Fine!" I snapped. "Now sit down or you'll end up with a broken neck!"

Eyes glued in front of me, I assumed Bucky had listened to my order and gone to strap himself in. Trying to concentrate on the island, I took a deep breath and gripped the controls. The island was speeding into view, getting closer and closer. But the plane was dropping quicker. Was I going to make it? Was I going to get us killed? Drowned? Exploded into-

The plane screeched in protest as I tried to lift the nose.

"Damn you!" I screamed, yanking the controls, trying to stop the jet from dipping so violently.

As if purposefully trying to argue with me, it lurched aggressively.

"Come on, stupid thing!" I yelled. "Lift!"

The landing would be close. Whether we managed to make it onto the island or not would be a very close call. The ocean's sparkling surface was approaching fast. The nose of the plane was aiming straight for it. We were going to drown, I knew it. I'd get us both killed-

Heart beating with panic, sweat running down my head, I pulled back on the controls in one final attempt to stop us sinking in the ocean. I sent a silent prayer and screwed my eyes shut. The jet screeched deafeningly, before a loud crash echoed in my ears. I felt a short, sharp jolt of excruciating pain in my body, before everything went black.
