"Kathryn, I-"

"Fuck, dude!" Kathryn exclaimed, jerking away from his touch, his hands dropping from her arms. "Do you not know how to watch where you're going?"

She was definitely at fault for that one...

Billy glanced behind her, ignoring her words. His concern mixed with something unreadable in his eyes. "You okay? What happened?" His gaze fixed on her, intense and questioning.

She stared back, furrowing her brows. Letting out a slow breath, her racing heart began to calm. "It's... it's nothing. I just..." she hesitated, searching for the right words, "I don't want to be late for class, that's all."

Billy gave her a skeptical look. "You hate Calculus, though."

She chuckled nervously, shifting her weight under his scrutiny. "Yeah, well... just because I hate it doesn't mean-"

She trailed off, glancing around as the weight of everything hit her: the recent tension between them, his breakup with Sidney, his strange behavior at her house yesterday. And, of course, her lingering crush on him. Not to mention, he was top of the list of suspects in the murders. She wasn't sure how to act around him anymore, especially after what had just happened in the restroom.

Before she could stop herself, she blurted, "Look, I'm sorry if I was being annoying yesterday. About you and Sid breaking up... and everything."

Billy raised an eyebrow, a slight smirk playing on his lips. "Annoying?"

"I don't want you to be mad at me," she admitted, a rare apology slipping from her.

His eyes narrowed as he stepped closer, his voice dropping low. "Why would I be mad at you?"

Kathryn shrugged, avoiding his gaze. "I don't know. You seemed pretty pissed when you left." She glanced down at the floor, only to glance back up and meet his eyes.

God, he's so pretty it hurts.

"I'm not mad at you," Billy chuckled, stepping back just enough to give her space to breathe again. "If anything, I thought you were mad at me."

"You did? Why?"

He shrugged, "You've been avoiding me all day. You bolted earlier-didn't even look at me."

Kathryn scoffed, hoping to mask the truth. She had been avoiding him. "Not looking at you doesn't mean I'm avoiding you, Billy."

"That's not what I said."

"You implied it," she shot back, hiking her bag onto her shoulder. The second bell rang, reminding her that she was officially late for class. "Look, I'm sorry if my not looking hurt your feelings, but I've got to go."

As she tried to walk past him, he spun her back around, gripping her arm just tight enough to stop her. "What are you-"

His hand ran through his hair in frustration. "Now you're acting like this," he said, gesturing at her with exasperation. "All cold, with these half-assed responses."

Kathryn blinked in shock. "You serious right now?"

They rarely fought like this. Sure, they bickered-usually at her instigation-but it was never serious, never this intense. This wasn't their usual banter. She almost had to pinch herself to believe this was happening.
