CHAPTER NINE, hell is a teenage girl
" I'm too sensitive when I start to cry but I'm a cold-hearted, uptight bitch when I keep it inside "

She didn't want to go to school the next day, but the thought of staying home all alone was worse. After all, the killer was still out there, and if he had her phone number, he probably had her address, too.

Usually, Kathryn and Nathan walked to school together, but since Nathan stayed over at a friend's house, Dewey insisted on dropping her off. She wasn't about to argue with him-walking alone wasn't all that appealing today.

"You sure you're okay, babe?" Tatum asked, sitting on Kathryn's left while Sidney sat on her right. "Is your head feeling better?"

Kathryn flashed them both a reassuring smile. "I'm fine, I promise." She glanced at Sidney, who stared out the window, watching the world blur by.

After everything that had happened-Sidney being attacked, breaking up with Billy, and then being ambushed again in the school restroom-Kathryn couldn't blame her for being distant. Dewey had only just decided to fill Kathryn in on the restroom incident when she got into his car.

Yet, despite all of that, a small part of Kathryn was relieved about Billy and Sidney's breakup. That little, selfish voice in her head kept whispering that now she might have a shot with him-the guy she'd secretly wanted for so long.

God, get a grip, will you?

Dewey pulled up in front of the school. "Alright, ladies. Here we are."

Tatum swung the door open and got out. Sidney lingered, her expression hesitant, until Kathryn placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.

"You don't have to do this if you're not ready," Kathryn said softly.

Sidney turned to her, her voice gentle as always. "I know, and, you don't have to either, Kat. You... you went through it too."

Just the mention of the attack at the studio sent a shiver down Kathryn's spine, the scar on her chest aching. She hated how every day when she looked in the mirror, she could see that mark glaring back at her.

Kathryn exhaled and forced a smile. "Well, nobody said high school was easy." She joked, trying to lighten the mood.

Sidney smiled faintly, and as they stepped out of the car, they were immediately engulfed by a swarm of reporters.

"How does it feel to be almost brutally murdered?"

Kathryn rolled her eyes. It's great, she thought. You should try it sometime-maybe then you'd finally shut the hell up.

Dewey jumped out of the Jeep, inserting himself between the reporters and the girls. "Leave them alone, will ya? This is a high school-they just want to go to class."

The flashing cameras and questions were overwhelming, but then a familiar figure appeared next to Kathryn. The scent of sweet wood and pine filled her senses as Stu loomed over the reporters, shoving a camera out of her face as he moved her through the crowd.

"Yo, get outta here!" Stu barked. "You're in the ladies' way."

Before Kathryn knew it, they were inside the school. Tatum held onto Sidney while Stu kept his arm around Kathryn's shoulders, like he was protecting her from the dangers of the world. It never happened before-she had almost mistaken it for cardiac arrest, but all of a sudden, a small swarm of butterflies appeared in her stomach.
