I kept seeing Dylan look at me. He has every class with me. He's probably just looking at me because I'm fat. I caught him staring at me again so I turned toward him.
"Take a picture. It lasts longer." He shrugged and took out his phone. He took a picture of me and smiled. He's super hot.
"Did you really just take one?" I asked. He nodded his head.
"Shh. Pay attention," he said. He gave me a quick wink and turned his head toward the teacher. Something was thrown at my face. I heard Chloe laugh.
"Stay away from him. He's mine," she said. I rolled my eyes.
"No. You stay away from me. Jane, you can be around me all you want," he said, looking Chloe dead in the eye. Chloe looked pissed. The bell rang and everyone got up. We all walked out. I thought I was the last one out. I noticed Dylan behind me.
"You can go," I said. He looked down on me and shook his head. Man he's tall too.
"Ladies first," he said, motioning for me to get out. I nodded my head and walked out. I went to my locker, only to have my stuff knocked out of my hands. I was pushed into my locker.
"I don't know why he would pick you over me. I mean just look at you. He's dumb picking some worthless fat girl over me. A skinny fit girl," Chloe said.
"Maybe because she's half the person you'll ever be," Benjamin said. He pushed Chloe out of the way. Chloe rolled her eyes and gave me an ugly look.
"I'm sorry," he said. He bent down to pick up my books. He gave them back and gave me a smile.
"Thank you," I said, quietly.
"No problem. Just watching out for my Lu- friend," he nervously said. "Let me walk you to your next class." I just nodded my head. We walked in silence until he spoke.
"What do you think about Dylan?" He asked. I shrugged my shoulders.
"He keeps staring at me. He's also showing no interest in Chloe. Usually everyone does. You don't either. Why is that?" Benjamin chuckled.
"Maybe he likes you. Dylan doesn't like girls who cares a lot about their appearance. And constantly need attention. I don't show her any attention because I have a girlfriend."
"Oh. Well I don't think he likes me. I wouldn't," I mumbled the last part. Ben stopped abruptly.
"It doesn't matter what size you are, Jane. Don't listen to what Chloe has to say. She's dumb and thinks she's the queen. It's not right how she's treating you. Stand up to her. Take pride in your size. You're beautiful either way. You think Dylan doesn't like you because you're bigger than half these girls here? He doesn't care what size you are.
"What matters is how you treat people. Chloe is just some stuck up snob. You are so much more than that. Dylan isn't one to judge someone based on their size or appearance. But simply the way they act. He's going to choose you over anyone because you're nice and sweet. So don't beat yourself up because you aren't skinny." Tears were starting to come out of my eyes. Ben hugged me and that's when I heard a growl? Ben let go and Dylan took his place.
"No one has ever told me something like that," I whispered. Dylan was rubbing my back.
"It's okay," he cooed. "He's just a really good friend." I started to hiccup. He chuckled. "Let's get you cleaned up then." He walked me to the girl's restroom and made sure no one was in there. He told Ben to make sure no girls came in. Dylan took off my glasses and grabbed a wet paper towel. He dabbed my eyes.
"You're beautiful Jane. Don't ever change or think you aren't," Dylan said. I felt my face getting hot. I moved a piece of hair behind my ear and Dylan grabbed my wrist. He saw my scars.
"What's this?" He asked, worry in his eyes. "Why have you been doing this?" His voice rose a little bit. He grip tightened around my wrist. "Jane. Why?" He sounded angry.
"Dylan. You're hurting me," I managed to say. His eyes softened and were full of regret.
"Jane. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to," he said, his voice softer. I coward away from him.
"Jane," he pleaded. He was about to place a hand on me when I flinched back. He stood back up and went out of the bathroom.
"Calm down. She's human. She doesn't know," Ben told him. What? Of course I'm human. So are they...right? Ben walked up to the stall and offered me a hand. I took it and he pulled me up with ease.
"I'm sorry about Dylan. He didn't mean to hurt you. He just got mad. About.." His voice trailed off. I looked down at my wrist and traced over the scars.
"Why does he care? Why do you care?" I asked. Ben looked down and then back up.
"He'll tell you when he's ready. Just give him a chance?" Ben asked. I let out a frustrated sigh.
"Fine. What do you mean by he'll tell me when he's ready?" I asked. Benjamin just nodded and walked out of the bathroom. I groaned. I walked out and everyone was staring at me.
"What were they all doing in there?" Someone asked. I ignored it and walked past everyone. I heard a few "whore" and "slut" as I walked passed. I felt the tears but held them back. Don't let them see you cry. That's just what they want.
I walked into one of my classes and took a seat in the back, as usual. Dylan was there. He sat right beside me. Benjamin sat in front of me. I looked over at Dylan and he still looked pissed.
Class was about halfway over then he turned towards me.
"Why? Why do you do that? I don't understand?" Dylan asked. I gave him a casual shrug.
"You try being bullied every single day and tell me you wouldn't feel like complete shit," I said. The teacher slammed a book on her desk. I whipped my head towards her.
"Jane. Dylan," she said.
"Yes?" We asked in unison.
"Why are you talking while I'm teaching?" She asked.
"Why are you teaching during my conversation?" Dylan asked. She was fuming now.
"Out. Both of you." Dylan shrugged and got up and walked out. I sat there trying to register what happened.
"Are your ears not working? I said to get out." I nodded and walked out. I took a seat on the floor, opposite of Dylan.
"Was that really necessary?" I asked. He nodded.
"You're being bullied everyday?" He asked.
"You couldn't tell? I'm the girl everyone picks on everyday. Because I'm not skinny like them. I've had even some of the really smart kids make fun of me. Do you know how much that hurts? So cutting released all of the pain I was feeling." My head hung and I felt a finger under my chin. As soon as we made contact I felt sparks and warmth course through my entire body. He smashed his lips to mine. It was my first kiss and it was amazing. He pulled back.
"I'm sorry people bully you. They can just go die in a hole. And I'll hurt anyone who says anything to you. Okay?" He said. I just nodded, still dazed by the kiss. "Also I know you're strong enough to get ahold of your life. People who do that just can't sometimes. But I know you can. You're strong. Just promise me you won't do it anymore?"
"Promise."
The bell rang and everyone was starting to leave school.
I walked out and grabbed my keys from my pocket. I unlocked my car when I heard my name. I turned to see Dylan walking/jogging to me.
"Can I drive you home?" He asked.
"I don't usually let anyone drive my baby. But I guess?" I said, but it came out more like a question.
I was directing him to my house when I wondered how he was going to get home.
"How do you plan on getting home?" I asked.
"I don't live far from here actually. Just a few blocks away," he said. I nodded and we arrived at my house. There was a familiar blue car in the driveway.
Then the air caught in my throat. I knew exactly who's car that was.
My dad.
