the bell tolls

The dead reside not in our world anymore
We as people do much to remember their passing
Burning pyres, ringing bells,
Stories uttered softly, kind memories
But, for whom does the bell toll?
Hemmingway once asserted
It tolls for thee
Appealing to the unity of humanity
I wish to disagree
The bell serves two purposes in this world of insanity
The first is the obvious. It reminds those who knew
Those connected to the dead
It calls them to their memory,
The second is a promise
That if you stay, the bell will toll for you too
It is a coercive force, a call to worship
To keep you there, so that one day
That bell may toll for you
A promise that you will not die in ignominy
Forgotten and tossed aside, a dreg of humanity
For the bell shall toll for you two
If you stay in line
