1 hour later-
Nightshade had stolen some armor off of a guard. How that guard didn't notice? Let's just say her mouth wasn't cold anymore.
She sauntered along the stone cold hallways, looking almost exactly like a MudWing. Except of course, for the frills. Her armor covered almost every part of her exposed scales. It even covered her wing membrane, of which the bleeding had stopped.
Another guard walked past her in the same hallway. The guard noticed the red, and went to warn the Queen, but Nightshade didn't notice. Just normal guard things, randomly turning around and walking extremely fast. Maybe I should try it too! Nightshade pivoted and started running towards the throne room. She reached the door, and began to slow down. Then she noticed 4 guards next to the door.
"Important business for the Queen."
"Uh, I don't think so. We have orders not to let anyone through. There is a RainWing assassin walking about." The one that spoke was a huge MudWing, almost half as tall as the 20-talon doors!
Nightshade thought for a second, thousands of ideas flying through her brain. "Well, how do you know one of YOU isn't the RainWing?" The guards turned towards each other. Hah! Got 'em! The big one turned towards the one closest to him and grabbed her.
"You. Name every single MudWing Queen from the past 100 years!" The petite dragon in his talons let out a surprised growl. She started rattling off names, and that was when Nightshade slipped through the doors. When the big guard looked back, all he saw was a pile of armor, and a door ajar.
Nightshade had turned invisible, hiding the hole in her wing by folding it up. She snuck up to the throne, where a huge dark brown dragon was reading a scroll. Ah, so that's what Monsoon looks like. Nightshade got close to the throne, and when she was 5 talons away, she bowed and turned into a deep purple.
"AAHH! WHAT ARE YOU!" The Queen jumped up and held out the scroll like a dagger. Nightshade bowed deeply and began to tell the Queen of the, as the RainWings called it, 'the tragedy of Anaconda.'
"So, that's how Queen Anaconda died, and Queen Jacaranda wishes to continue the alliance you had with her mother." As Nightshade finished the tale, Queen Monsoon sat back down slowly.
"Well. That's a lot to take in. Anaconda, dead. A 10-year old dragon ruling the kingdom." The Queen wrote something down on a scroll. "Here, take this to Jacaranda. It's a copy of the alliance treaty." Nightshade grabbed the scroll and bowed again.
"Thank you, Queen Monsoon. And a question, where would Princess Delta's room happen to be?" The Queen stiffened.
"Why would you want to know that?" The Queen glanced at a guard near her and jerked her head to a tunnel nearby. "There's no reason a RainWing ambassador would need to know where my eldest daughter's room is."
Nightshade gave a small bow. "I'm sorry, Your Majesty, but I was inquiring on my Queen's behalf. You see, the Queen's youngest daughter, about the same age as Princess Delta, is learning about the other tribes and wanted to meet a MudWing close to her age, also a royal. So I just wanted to bring a message from her you see." The lie was perfectly crafted, believable and hard to disprove. He he. Maybe I am still cut out for the work of an assassin.
Nightshade bowed again while the Queen relaxed then told her the location of the MudWing princess' room. Perfect. Soon I'll be able to return to the rainforest. Nightshade then thanked the Queen, and went on her way to the princess' room.
As she walked to the princess' room, guards nodded at her in the hallways. Ha. Very different from earlier. Nightshade weaved through the mass of tunnels, but these were decorated. Perhaps now is a good time to give you readers a better idea of what Nightshade looked like.
As you know, she had a misshaped wing, but she also had a smaller than average frill, and she usually had on at least 3 arm bands. On this mission she had a small silver teardrop earring, with a nightshade flower carved into it. She mostly had dark purple or blue scales, with a bit of red mixed in. She rarely changed that color, except when she had an extremely large emotion, or needed to disguise herself.
Nightshade had now reached the princess' room. A massive mahogany door loomed against a grey stone wall. As the RainWing got closer, she noticed 5 guards around the door. She turned invisible, and bared her fangs. She crept up toward the closed door. A guard cautiously opened up the door. Nightshade slipped inside, and could barely stifle a gasp when she saw the destruction around her.
The room seemed like it had been swallowed by a hurricane. Furniture had been knocked over and thrown across the room. Tapestries were torn. Basically, mass destruction. Nightshade couldn't believe it. She scanned the room looking for one thing. Delta.
There was no MudWing princess in the room. She had simply disappeared.
