3rd Person POV:

Wendy looked at the red and white themed gifts with wide and fearful eyes. Would Max like stuffed bears or stuffed cats? Or the stuffed dog? Or the heart–no that's too much. The coffee mug could be useful for Max, she could use it for tea or just..water. Or put pencils in it, Wendy doesn't know.

Wendy finally settled her eyes on the cards. There are too many, very eccentric, and quite frankly, very overstimulating for Wendy. She grabbed a card and opened it to see the writing inside, jumping in surprise when the music started to play out of it. Definitely not that one.

"Wendy?"

Wendy looked over her shoulder with wide eyes, seeing Lucas looking at her with confusion.

"Are you looking at Valentine's Day stuff?" Lucas asked.

"No.." Wendy lied, throwing the card back at the display, not paying attention to it as it fell to the floor, music playing out of it when it fell open. Wendy quickly kicked it under the shelf.

Lucas looked at Wendy with a concealed look of amusement as he walked over to stand next to her.

"So, give me the rundown," Lucas rubbed his hands excitedly. "What are the top choices?"

"The..stuffed toys are too much, so I think I'll get a card..or the mug," Wendy said, her face flushing red. "I haven't decided yet."

"I'd go safe with the card," Lucas shrugged, grabbing a simple card on the top shelf and passing it to Wendy. "Maybe write a cute poem or something? Or don't write anything, up to you, of course."

Wendy looked at the card, it'll do. Now, what the hell does she write?!

"Also," Lucas said, reaching to the lower shelf and pulling out a small bag of candy. He plopped it in Wendy's hand. "She likes Reeses Cups."

Wendy looked at Lucas in surprise, she hadn't told him about her crush on Max yet. She knew Lucas still liked her and didn't want to hurt him.

"I-um-how did you–"

"I figured it out," Lucas said calmly. "It's okay, I'm not mad. We can't control who we like."

Wendy gulped and gave an awkward nod.

"Lucas," Erica came from around the corner. "Mom says to hurry up."

"Yeah, give me a second," Lucas told his sister before looking at Wendy. "Good luck, I mean it. I'm happy for you."

As Lucas walked away, Wendy stood there dumbly, her mind short-circuiting. She blinked back into reality and scurried to the checkout.

"Cash or card?" The boy at the checkout asked. His hair was dyed black, had black eyeliner around his eyes and a lip ring. Wendy recognizes him from school, he's a part of the writer's club that Max has been eyeing to join lately. What was his name? Colin, she thinks.

"Cash," Wendy said, handing him the money.

"Have a good day," The boy sighed, handing her the bag with her card, candy, and change.

Wendy walked away from the register but stopped, spinning around in her tracks and walking back, making Colin look at her in confusion.

"Did you..want your receipt?" Colin asked, holding up the thin paper.

"No, you can throw it away," Wendy waved off before looking at him seriously. "What do you do in your writing club?"

Colin blinked in surprise, putting the dots together that this was Wendy Harrington, part-time Harrington and full-time nerd, talking to him.
