A V A
I ran to the door excitedly when the bell rang. Usually, Jeremy would come inside on his own since it was his house, and he could come and go as he pleased.
But today, he might have forgotten his keys, which explained why he rang the bell instead of just walking in.
I was certain it was him. He had assured me that no one would come to the house-not even a delivery person. "You're safe here," he had said, letting everyone who needed to reach him know they should catch him at the university, as I was staying with him these days.
True to his word, I hadn't encountered anyone unexpected since moving in a couple of weeks ago.
With a big grin, I swung the door open, but the smile quickly vanished when I saw who was standing there.
My heart gave an unexpected jolt, my breath slowed, and suddenly it felt as though invisible hands were gripping my throat, making it hard to breathe.
In her classy business skirt suit, with her hair slicked back, and wearing her usual expression of arrogance, my mother stood at the door. Her sharp gaze was enough to send shivers down anyone's spine.
She was looking directly into my soul.
My throat went dry, and tears pricked the corners of my eyes as I stared at her, unblinking, for what felt like an eternity. Our gazes locked-mine empty, hers filled with unreadable emotions.
I finally blinked when my vision blurred from staring too long. I looked away.
I knew why she was here today. I had prepared for this moment ever since our last encounter. I had known she would come for me, though I hadn't expected it to take this long.
I had been waiting for it. And now, it was happening.
She was here.
To take me with her.
And I was ready.
With one last glance at Jeremy's house, I locked the door and stepped outside.
"Not waiting for him to say goodbye?" she asked. Her voice, sharp and cold, sent a wave of anger through me.
I tried to stay composed, inhaling deeply. Without looking at her, I replied, "If I stayed, he'd never let me go." My voice was laced with bitterness. Even speaking to her stoked the hatred I felt.
Silence followed. Then, without another word, she turned on her heel, and I followed. We were almost at her car when Vincent appeared out of nowhere.
"Hey, kiddo! How've you been?" His usual playful tone quickly faded when he noticed the woman beside me. His smile disappeared, and he glanced between the two of us.
"Where are you going?" he asked in suspicion.
I stayed silent, staring past him. Sensing the tension, he added, "Is she your mom?"
