A V A
The atmosphere was tense, conversations fading to a low murmur.
Everyone reached out with their condolences, offering words to me and Albert, who sat beside me in his black suit. The room was filled with people—some familiar, others strangers—but I couldn't make out their faces or the pity in their eyes. I wasn’t wearing my glasses, and for once, I was glad.
I didn’t want to see their sympathy. It was better this way, a blur of voices and shadows rather than the weight of their pity staring back at me.
The crowd slowly began to disperse, their murmurs fading into the background. But then, my eyes landed on a figure I never expected to see here.
A wave of rage washed through me as she approached Albert. For the first time that day, words forced their way out of my mouth—hoarse and filled with raw bitterness.
"Who let you in? Why are you here?"
The words flew out of my mouth, sharp and cutting, stopping everyone in the room. My mother flinched but didn’t move. I stood there, my body trembling as my voice grew louder, sharper, and filled with anger.
"Aren’t you satisfied? Isn’t this what you wanted? He’s gone now. You took him away, just like you said—away from me, away from us." Tears blurred my vision. I hadn’t cried even when my dad closed his eyes for the last time, not even when he was taken away from me, but now, I couldn’t hold them back. I wanted to scream.
I haven't spoken since then, even Albert, Lucy, Mr. Perez, and others...maybe it was Mrs. Everett..I didn't remember, They all tried to speak to me, asking me questions, I never said a word, but right now, looking at her made me spill out whatever had bottled up inside me for so long.
I licked my dry lips, my throat burning with every word, the dryness cutting through me. "I get it now. You always do what you say. You snatched him from me. You killed him. Your ego, your anger—it brought us here, that's what you wanted from the beginning."
Gasps rippled through the room, but I didn’t care. I stepped closer to her, my voice raw and broken, pouring out the pain I had kept inside. Tears streamed down my cheeks as Albert’s hand wrapped around my arm, his words a blur, lost in the chaos of my mind.
All I could hear were my father’s last words—the way he asked me not to hate her. How could he ask me that? How could he think that after whatever she did, I'll forgive her? How could I ever forgive her? I'll never forgive her I couldn't.
"Go away. Don’t come back here." I felt my chest heaving; I wasn't properly breathing, the uneasiness in my chest making it hard to breathe.
"Ava..." Her voice wavered, the confidence gone. Her eyes, once so strong...poised, now brimmed with guilt. "I’m your mother. Don’t say that."
