-Y/n pov-

I woke up to the morning breeze coming in through the window. After the battle, I'd been taken to the infirmary so the doctors could run tests on me. After being imprisoned like I was, they recommended I take an extended leave of absence from the scouts. After that, I was given a week off by the commander.

I sat up and let out a groan as I stretched my body. Turning my head, I saw Mikasa asleep at my bedside. She was sitting on a bench with her head laid down on the bed. Next to her was a sewing kit and her scarf. I picked the scarf up and looked it over. There was visible wear and tear on it but for whatever reason, she refused to get a new one. I set it back down right as she woke up.

Mikasa(yawns): You're up.

Y/n: Yeah. Laying in bed all day isn't my idea of resting.

Mikasa: Well, you seem to be a lot better.

Y/n: I'm looking forward to getting back in the field. I cant stand spending time doing nothing.

Mikasa: I know. While you were sleeping, I thought long and hard about what you said. It was selfish of me to say those things and I shouldn't have tried to stop you. It was unfair of me. I'm sorry.

Y/n: Yeah, it was. I tried so hard to keep you guys from joining me here but you just wouldn't listen. Why is it so important that you be by my side all the time?

Mikasa: I never told you this, but I made your mom a promise the day the wall fell. She asked me to never let you go astray and get caught up in something you couldn't handle. As for why I'm close to you all the time, I guess it's because you saved me back then. I just...

Y/n: Just what?

Mikasa: I don't want to lose you again. You've taught me not to give up even in the face of certain death. It's because of you that I was able to go on fighting in Trost. It's because of you that I'm strong.

I listened in silence as she talked. I had no idea she'd promise my mom to protect me. I was so focused on my own goals and aspirations that I didn't even think how it would affect everyone. I was just doing what I'd done before, albeit in a much tamer manner.

Y/n: I didn't know, I'm sorry.

Mikasa: No, I am. I should never have tried to stop you. I realize that now. I can fulfill my promise by fighting alongside you. I'm just scared that when the inevitable rematch against Reiner and Bertholdt comes, you'll be outmatched. There's a very real possibility that you'll die next time we see them and that terrifies me beyond belief. If I lost you again, I don't know what I'd do.

Y/n: I'm not going to die. There's still so much I have to do and as long as there is, I refuse to die. I'm going to keep on fighting until we reclaim what's ours and discover what Dad wanted me to find.

I opened my arms and she practically ran into them. I pressed my head into the crook of her neck as I hugged her tightly. I could feel her beating heart as we embraced. I leaned back and looked into her eyes before placing my lips on hers. She reacted by wrapping her arms around the back of my neck. We continued this for a while before separating.

Mikasa: I love you, so much.

Y/n: Me too.

Eren: You guys done yet?

I practically jumped out of my skin when I heard my brother's voice. He and the rest of the squad were standing in the doorway.

Y/n: How long have you been standing there?
