Time seemed to stretch endlessly as we navigated the labyrinthine hallways of the cave. Each turn felt like a step deeper into an abyss. It was as if we were wandering in circles, with no clear destination in sight. Yet, in the Astral realm, every place had its significance, its beginning and an end. So, we were certainly going somewhere but we were very unsure of where.
Turning back was far from an option. Neither of us felt like dying in such a way. So, wherever we were going with these tunnels seemed like a better option than whatever waited for us out there. Or so we hoped.
As the darkness thickened, I found myself reflecting on the choices that had led us here. Every decision, every alliance, had narrowed into this single moment, and I wondered how much longer we could keep going.
I knew Loki would find a way out of this somehow. Belial too. But me? I wasn't so sure. My future felt suspended, untethered. Loki had told me to keep moving because I was a king of demons, but right then I didn't feel like much of anything at all.
I cut the familiar spiral of self-pity and self-loathing before it could fully take hold. Turning toward Belial, I noticed the focus etched into his expression. The moment his eyes met mine, it softened, and I offered him a small smile.
"Are you sure this isn't the way to the Abyss?" I asked lightly, even though the possibility wasn't funny in the slightest. Not at this rate.
"I don't remember it looking like this," Belial replied. "Matter of fact, it doesn't look anything like it."
That was... somewhat relieving. Still, the uncertainty lingered, coiling tight in my chest.
"This area feels very hollow," Loki said from ahead of us.
I raised an eyebrow, though he couldn't see it. "What do you mean?"
"I tried to feel the energy of this place, but..." He hesitated, searching for the words. "It's like there's no energy at all."
My heart dropped. Places like that didn't exist without reason. They weren't inherently evil, but they were never safe either. The unknown had always been worse than the known.
"Great," I muttered, my voice heavy with sarcasm as I sighed. "So we're choosing between getting fucked for sure out there... or probably getting fucked in here?"
Loki snorted, "yup. Don't worry, Asmo, you're safe with me." His reassurance provided little comfort but there was a certain warmth spreading through my body.
"Thank you, my brave knight," I laughed and suddenly the grimness of the situation we were in got lifted if only for a millimeter.
As the tension eased slightly, the cave still loomed around us in a foreboding silence. The air felt heavy, watchful, and I couldn't shake the sense of being observed by something unseen. It was a place stripped of life, and my steps faltered before I could stop myself. Loki's presence ahead of me kept me grounded, a steady pull forward.
Belial remained quiet, his gaze sweeping every corner, every shadow. His unease radiated off him, subtle but unmistakable. Whatever we had wandered into, he didn't understand it any more than I did.
At last, he spoke. "This place..." His voice was low. "It's like a void. I've heard stories about areas like this in the Astral. Dead zones. Places where even magic struggles to exist." He paused. "If that's what this is, then we're either standing on the edge of something dangerous, or we're already inside something we don't understand."
Before I could say anything, Loki stopped short and raised a hand.
"Wait," he said, barely louder than a breath.
Belial and I froze. Every muscle in my body tensed as I strained to listen. The silence thickened, pressing in, as though the cave itself were holding its breath.
