It was a slow afternoon at the station, the kind where Sunghoon's mind wandered too easily.
His desk was cluttered with paperwork, but he could barely focus on it.
His thoughts kept drifting back to Heeseung, to the look of quiet sadness on his face that morning.
The weight of their complicated relationship clung to him, leaving a knot in his chest.
He sighed, rubbing his temples as he sat back in his chair.
His eyes lazily scanned the room until the door to the station opened, and two figures caught his attention.
Jake and Jay.
Sunghoon stiffened immediately, his eyes narrowing as they walked in.
He instantly recognized them, especially Jake, the one who always seemed to linger too close to Heeseung.
Sunghoon had never trusted him.
There had been too many moments when Jake had been the one to make Heeseung laugh a little too hard, or to stand just a little too close, and every time, it made something dark stir inside Sunghoon.
He had thought about getting rid of Jake more times than he cared to admit.
The anger had simmered just below the surface for a long time.
Jay, on the other hand, was less of a concern.
He was always just there, never really causing trouble, never stepping on any boundaries.
Sunghoon could tolerate him.
But what were they doing here?
Sunghoon’s eyes followed them as they approached the front desk, and without thinking, he stood up from his seat.
His footsteps were slow and deliberate as he crossed the room, his expression neutral, though inside, the tension was already building.
"What can I help you with?" Sunghoon asked as he approached them, his voice calm but holding an edge that was impossible to miss.
He eyed Jake in particular, the irritation flaring up just at the sight of him.
Jake’s jaw clenched, his fists tightening at his sides as if he was gearing up to say something.
Sunghoon could see the anger boiling behind Jake’s eyes, and it almost brought a twisted sense of satisfaction.
Jake wanted to fight.
But before Jake could speak, Jay placed a hand on his shoulder, holding him back.
"Jake."
Jay said quietly, his tone warning.Jake gritted his teeth but stepped back, glaring at Sunghoon all the while.
Jay then stepped forward, doing his best to keep his composure.
He knew exactly what Sunghoon was capable of.
What he had done to Heeseung, and every part of him wanted to throw it in Sunghoon’s face, but he had to play this smart.
Getting into a fight here wouldn’t help anyone, least of all Heeseung.
"Officer Park.."
Jay began, his voice steady, polite.
"We came because we’re worried about Heeseung."Sunghoon’s eyes flickered slightly, though he kept his face impassive. "Worried? About what?"
Jay shifted uncomfortably, feeling the weight of Sunghoon’s gaze on him. He took a deep breath, trying to find the right words.
"He was..really off today at school. He didn’t eat, he barely talked to anyone, and he looked-"
Jay hesitated, his eyes briefly meeting Sunghoon’s.
"He looked upset. Really upset. We’ve never seen him like that."
