The world outside the windows of the hospital waiting room was deceptively calm. It was a clear, crisp day, the kind that makes the autumn air feel electric, filled with vibrant orange and red leaves that danced in the wind. But for Travis, the beauty outside was a cruel contrast to the chaos spiraling within him.
His knee bounced up and down, hands clenching and unclenching as he sat in the stiff hospital chair, waiting for any update. The news had hit him like a truck earlier that day. Taylor had been in a car accident. The words still echoed in his head, almost surreal.
"Is she okay? What happened?" His heart had immediately sunk when the call came. "What do you mean she's at the hospital?"
The woman on the other end of the phone—Taylor's assistant—had tried her best to stay calm as she explained that Taylor had been in a collision. It wasn't life-threatening, but she had been rushed to the hospital for further examination. Travis didn't hear much beyond that. He was already grabbing his keys, racing out the door and heading straight for the hospital.
The drive there felt endless. All the while, his mind played through every worst-case scenario. What if she was hurt worse than they thought? What if she was scared, lying there alone, needing him? His heart ached at the thought.
Now, as he sat in that sterile waiting room, time seemed to stretch on forever. He glanced at the clock on the wall, its ticking only adding to his anxiety. He hadn't even seen her yet.
His phone buzzed with messages, but he ignored them all. There was nothing anyone could say to ease his worry right now. He ran a hand through his hair, glancing up every time a nurse or doctor walked by, hoping someone would give him news about Taylor.
Finally, after what felt like hours, a nurse approached him. "Mr. Kelce?"
He shot up from his chair, his heart in his throat. "Yeah, that's me. How is she? Is Taylor okay?"
The nurse gave him a reassuring smile. "She's stable. There's no major damage, but she does have a concussion and a few bruises. We're monitoring her just to be safe, but she's awake now. You can go see her."
Travis exhaled, a massive weight lifting off his chest. "Thank God," he muttered, following the nurse down the hallway toward Taylor's room.
As he entered the room, the beeping of the monitors was the first thing he noticed. His eyes scanned the room until they landed on her—Taylor, sitting up in the hospital bed, looking a little worse for wear but very much alive. Her face was pale, and there was a small bandage on her forehead. A few bruises marked her arms, but she was awake. She was there.
"Hey, you," she said softly, her voice a little hoarse. Her eyes lit up as soon as she saw him.
Travis crossed the room in two quick strides, immediately leaning down to wrap his arms around her. He held her as gently as he could, careful not to hurt her, but he couldn't stop himself from pulling her close.
"Jesus, Tay," he breathed into her hair. "You scared the hell out of me."
"I'm sorry," she whispered, her voice breaking just a little. "I didn't mean to. It just... happened so fast."
He pulled back just enough to look at her, his hands cupping her face. "What happened? Are you really okay?" His eyes searched hers for any sign that she was in pain or afraid.
"I'm okay," she reassured him. "The doctor said it could've been worse, but the airbags deployed, and I was wearing my seatbelt. I just... I don't know what happened. One minute I was driving, and the next, this car came out of nowhere."
Travis exhaled shakily, running a hand through her tangled hair. "I'm just glad you're okay. God, I don't know what I would've done if..." He didn't even want to finish that sentence. The idea of losing her was too much to bear.
