Later that night, the family gathered around the kitchen table, the warm glow of candlelight filling the cozy farmhouse as they ate a simple meal of beef and rice. Laughter and conversation flowed easily as they recounted the events of the day. As they continued to eat, Rum cleared his throat, feeling the weight of his news pressing on his mind.
Rum: So... I got invited to King Mercer's court.
The moment the words left his mouth, the entire family froze mid-bite, their eyes widening in disbelief. The room went quiet for a beat as they all processed what Rum had just said. His mother's hand trembled as she set her spoon down, and his father's brow furrowed in confusion.
Pillo: To King Mercer's court? Like... the actual king?
Rum: Yeah, to celebrate my... uh... victory over the dragon.
He starts rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. The family erupted into a mixture of gasps and excited murmurs, their astonishment palpable. They had never imagined anything like this happening. Having the king himself invite Rum to court? It was something they could never have dreamed of.
Yapa: No way! The king wants to celebrate you? That sounds incredible, dude!
Rum smiled sheepishly and pulled out the sealed letter from his pocket, placing it on the table. His father, still in a bit of a daze, reached for it and opened the envelope carefully, as if handling something precious. He unfolded the letter and began reading the formal invitation aloud, his voice filled with disbelief, but happiness. After a moment, his father set the letter down and looked at Rum with shining eyes.
Adonis: This is actually happening. You're being recognized by the king himself, Rum. This is... I don't even know what to say.
Rum: Crazy, right? Also, uh, do you all want to come with me? The king wouldn't mind me bringing guest along, so I thought about bringing you guys.
For a split second, the family just stared at him, almost too stunned to respond. But then, all at once, they erupted into unanimous agreement.
Lite: Of course! How could we miss something like this?
Pillo: Absolutely! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
Adonis: I wouldn't miss this chance.
Yapa: I always wanted to walk inside of a castle!
The table buzzed with excitement as they all began talking at once, making plans and imagining what the trip to the capital would be like. Rum couldn't help but smile at their enthusiasm, feeling a warmth spread through his chest. This celebration wasn't just for him, it was for them too. It was a chance for all of them to experience something beyond their wildest dreams
Later that night, after the excitement of the day had finally calmed, the house fell into a peaceful silence as everyone went to bed. Rum lay beneath his blankets, staring up at the ceiling as his mind wandered. Thoughts of the invitation to King Mercer's court swirled in his head, what would the king think of him? What kind of celebration awaited him? Would he be honored in front of the entire kingdom? As these thoughts looped in his mind, Rum found himself slowly drifting off to sleep. His body relaxed under the warmth of the blankets, and soon, his breathing became steady as he succumbed to his exhaustion.
But as sleep took him, Rum's dreams were not peaceful. Instead, they were filled with strange, shattered images, flashes of moments and places he had no recollection of. The scenes were fragmented, like broken pieces of a puzzle. He saw glimpses of what seemed like faint memories of a life he had never lived, or perhaps something entirely foreign to him. He couldn't quite place them, but they felt both distant and disturbingly familiar.
