Our debate was going well. I noticed that Charlie seemed off today. I didn't think anything of it. Suddenly, she slowly lowered her paper on the podium, as if she was finished."Taxes are what help keep schools, roads, library's, and other places intact. Without taxes the pot holes in roads wouldn't be filled. Police and fire stations wouldn't be fund. This is why Taxes are important to cities. This can put more trust and loyalty into the government." I straightened my posture and smiled.
Charlie let out a small chuckle. Mrs. Henry looked at her with disgust. "What's so funny, Charlie?" Charlie's face beamed of red and she wiped sweat from her neck. She looked extremely embarrassed, but I guess her adrenaline took over. "I just think it's very strange for someone to talk about honesty and loyalty to my face when their sister doesn't know what that even is." Snickers came from the class and some couldn't breathe because they couldn't stop laughing.
I felt embarrassed and shocked as my face started to turn pink. At first, Charlie looked very proud of herself. That quickly went away when she saw my face and the steam fuming from Mrs. Henry.
How could she do this during a debate especially addressing a private situation between our older siblings. My sister is the sweetest and most loyal person Ive ever known! Her brother is the problem, she must be so ignorant to not realize that."Finish your debates, you and Ivy can discuss this later." Our teacher looked furious but also confused. The top student of our class had an outburst. We finished our debate and we got a huge applause, probably because of Charlie. Mrs. Henry was ready to count the votes when I looked at Charlie, ready to see her reaction when I beat her. My happiness was replaced with something I couldn't comprehend. Charlie was staring off her face with a blank expression and her body still. The feeling of defeat hit her. I do feel satisfied that I won but...something inside me made me feel regret?..
