Lila barely slept that night. Her mind was consumed with thoughts of Eli's message, the cryptic warning about Noah, and the dangerous web she was caught in. Every time she closed her eyes, the tension in her chest grew tighter, her thoughts louder.
By the time her alarm went off, she had made her decision.
Noah was downstairs, already making breakfast. The smell of pancakes filled the air, and for a brief moment, Lila felt like everything could be normal. She stood at the doorway, watching him as he flipped a pancake with a kind of ease that made her smile.
"Morning," he said with a warm grin when he noticed her. "Pancakes with extra blueberries. Your favorite."
Lila forced a smile and nodded, but her stomach churned with guilt. How could she sit down and eat with him knowing she was planning to meet Eli behind his back?
"Thanks," she murmured, sliding into a chair. She picked at the food, unable to take more than a few bites. Her mind was elsewhere—on the meeting, on the secrets Noah could be hiding, and whether this would change everything between them.
Noah poured himself a cup of coffee and sat across from her, his eyes studying her face. "You okay? You seem... off."
Lila shook her head quickly. "I'm fine. Just didn't sleep well."
He frowned but didn't push it further. "Well, we've got a lot to figure out today. Asher's not going to back off, and I'm worried he's planning something bigger than we realize."
Lila nodded absentmindedly, her thoughts still on Eli's message. What was so important that Eli didn't want Noah to know? She had to find out.
As soon as breakfast was over, Lila excused herself. "I'm going to head out for a bit. Need some fresh air."
Noah looked concerned but didn't stop her. "You sure you're okay?"
"Yeah, I just need to clear my head."
At noon, Lila stood in the park, her heart pounding in her chest. The same park where she had seen Asher, where everything had started to spiral out of control. The tension in the air was thick, and every shadow felt like it was hiding something.
Eli appeared from the other side of the park, his expression serious. Lila had never seen him look so tense before. She waved him over, trying to calm her nerves.
"What's going on, Eli? What's so important that you didn't want me to tell Noah?"
Eli looked around, as if checking for eavesdroppers, before speaking in a low voice. "Lila, you need to be careful. There's something about Noah that you don't know. Something big."
Lila crossed her arms, her pulse quickening. "What are you talking about? You're being vague. I need details."
Eli hesitated, glancing around again before stepping closer. "Noah's been keeping something from you. He's not who you think he is."
Lila narrowed her eyes, her mind racing. "What do you mean?"
"I mean," Eli said, his voice low and steady, "he's been lying to you. About who he really is. About his past. And about his money."
Her breath hitched. "His money? What are you talking about?"
"Noah comes from money, Lila. Big money. And he's been hiding it from you. He doesn't want you to know who he really is, where he really comes from."
Lila's heart pounded in her chest. She took a step back, the ground seeming to shift beneath her. "Noah? A billionaire? That doesn't make sense. He's—he's so down-to-earth, so humble."
Eli gave her a look filled with pity. "That's the thing, Lila. He's been pretending to be someone else. I think he's been protecting you, or maybe protecting himself, but either way, he hasn't been honest."
Lila felt like the wind had been knocked out of her. Could this really be true? Had Noah been hiding such a massive secret from her all this time?
As she stood there, reeling from Eli's words, her phone buzzed. A message from Noah.
"Where are you? I'm starting to worry."
Her hands trembled as she read the message. What was she supposed to do now? Confront Noah? Or continue to act like nothing had changed?
Eli's voice broke through her thoughts. "I didn't tell you this to hurt you, Lila. I just thought you deserved to know. You have to decide how you want to handle this."
Lila's head was spinning. She nodded weakly, unable to find the words to respond. She needed time to think, to process everything.
But deep down, she knew that nothing would ever be the same between her and Noah again.
