At just fifteen years old, Victoria had always been the smartest girl in her class.
In fact, she was even smarter than any of the boys, although she did her best not to brag about it or to show off.
Sure, she looked like a girly girl with light pink hair that went down to her shoulders. For the first day of school, she had styled her locks into pigtails for that "schoolgirl" look.
But behind the blue eyes, dainty nose, and soft cheeks was a brain so powerful that she would be accepted into a very prominent university in a few years.
Dozens of high-profile scientists would be honored to say they had been her professor.
But one thing even she didn't understand in this moment, though, was the school's new disciplinary system.
It was something called "brown slime" and the email the school had sent out wasn't too specific about what it was—only saying that students should bring a change of clothing, and not wear anything too expensive to school.
She'd always had a bad habit of taking things way too seriously, and so she prepared for the day by not wearing her best clothes to school.
But she felt that her outfit was nice enough to look presentable—just a white button-up top, gray slacks, and black sneakers that had a little bit of wear but still looked okay.
She did like looking her best, after all!
Still, she wasn't quite sure what to make of this mysterious brown slime...
"Hey Vic," her friend, Lila, said to her while she was standing at her locker, "You have any idea what the slime thing is about?"
The two were friends from elementary school and had remained close throughout the years.
But unlike Victoria, who was a serious student, Lila was more of a free spirit.
The girl was a fiery redhead who had a slightly bigger build, yet also had the confidence to dress in ways that drew more attention.
"Well, we had to bring spare clothes," Victoria said, "so it's got to be something messy."
"Totally," Lila chirped as the two walked into their first class. "I'm not looking forward to finding out what it is."
Victoria and Lila took their seats near the front and waited for their teacher. As they were sitting there, one of Victoria's guy friends, John, walked up and sat down beside her.
He was a tall, dark-haired boy who was pretty much a stereotypical geek. He often wore the same serious expression as Victoria, and they both had a strong love for comic books.
"What's up, Vic?" John asked them.
"Brown slime," Victoria sighed, "Can't believe they're introducing that here."
"Yeah, that sucks," John agreed, "I hate getting dirty."
"Me too!" Victoria laughed. "Like, I really can't stand stepping in mud or getting food on my hands. It's terrible!"
"Yeah," Lila interjected, "I've been wondering. What is brown slime anyway?"
"I'm not sure," Victoria shrugged, "I can't find anything on the Internet about it at all."
The bell rang and the rest of the class took their seats as Mr. Gordano, a short, stocky man in his fifties with a receding hairline and a stern look on his face, walked into the room.
Victoria thought he was a little bit boring, but she didn't mind that. She had questions that needed answering and he seemed to have the answers.
"Alright, class," the teacher said in a deep voice, "Today's going to be an... interesting day. You'll all be introduced to the new disciplinary system our school has instituted. I've got a feeling you won't like it, but don't worry. It's not going to kill you. Probably."
