Kaitlyn is a sophomore in high school, living in a small town called Greenville.
And her life is going okay. She's a member of the dance team, and she's got a pretty good friend group.
It's the middle of a cold, rainy day, and she's standing in the school hallway talking to her best friend, Ashley.
"So, anyway, my mom told me I couldn't go out with Brandon tonight," Ashley sighs, "which totally sucks."
"Oh yeah?" Kaitlyn asks, only half paying attention as she glances over the flyer for a school play that someone has pinned to a corkboard next to Ashley's locker.
"Yeah, because we have to go visit my grandma this weekend," Ashley explains.
Kaitlyn turns her attention back to her friend and smiles.
"Well, I'm sure it won't be that bad," she says. "And you can always go out with Brandon next week, right?"
"I guess," Ashley sighs. "But I was really looking forward to going out tonight."
Kaitlyn nods sympathetically, even though she doesn't really understand why Ashley is so upset.
"Hey, did you know they're having auditions for the school play next week?" Kaitlyn asks, gesturing to the flyer.
"Oh, that?" Ashley laughs. "Yeah, I heard about that."
"Do you want to try out with me?"
"Oh, no," Ashley replies, shaking her head. "I don't act."
"Why not?" Kaitlyn asks. "I think it could be fun."
"Because I'm not good at it," Ashley says with a shrug. "Plus, I have other stuff going on, like cheerleading and gymnastics."
"So do I," Kaitlyn replies. "But I think it would be fun."
Ashley looks at her friend like she's crazy.
"I don't know, maybe," Ashley says. "I'll think about it."
"Great!" Kaitlyn exclaims, smiling broadly. "We should totally do it together."
"Yeah, I said maybe," Ashley reiterates. "Now, come on, let's get to class."
Kaitlyn is a little bit of an overweight girl. She has long, curly blonde hair, blue eyes, and a pretty face. She's wearing a loose-fitting blue t-shirt, a pair of white shorts, and a pair of black sneakers.
She's not very popular, but she's well-liked by most, who think she's sweet and funny.
Ashley is a slim, attractive brunette. She has long hair, big brown eyes, and a pretty face. She's wearing a tight pink top, long black slacks, and a pair of white sneakers.
She's also not one of the popular girls, but she's well-known around the school because of her looks.
As the two girls walk down the hall, they pass a group of jocks standing by their lockers. One of them, a handsome guy named Mike, spots Ashley and gives her a flirty wink.
Ashley blushes and looks away. She's had a crush on Mike for a while now, but she's too shy to do anything about it.
Kaitlyn notices this interaction and rolls her eyes.
"Come on," she says, grabbing Ashley's hand and pulling her away. "We're gonna be late for class."
The two girls hurry off to their next class, giggling as they go.
Meanwhile, the jocks are still hanging around their lockers, talking and laughing.
"Man, do you see that chick Ashley?" one of them, a tall boy with dark hair named Matt, asks. "She is fine as hell."
